ETHICS OF MEDIA MANAGEMENT

In general

- Electronic and Digital Media managers make decisions every


working day.
- Sometimes they face challenging, ethical situations.
- There are solutions to these situations.
But, how would you handle each of these situations if you were a
manager?

Implementing an Ethics Program:


Good companies and their managers take steps as LEADERS to
address ethical issues routinely and make ETHICAL PRINCIPLES an
integral part of their practices.
1.State the mission
2.Clarify the values of the organization
3.Create a code of ethics
4.Develop an ethics program
•Complete necessary info (mission statement, values, and code of
ethics)
•Orient all new employees to the ethical principles of the company
•Conduct ethics seminars for all levels of management
•Take time to discuss ethical issues in management and staff
meetings
•Regularly evaluate your ethics program
Ethics began long time ago in ancient Greek:

- ethics is about what is right and what is wrong.


- ethics is about dealing with the moral aspects of life.

There are different ways to study ethics.


- empirical methods: to describe the particular moral values of a group
or society.
- another area is: normative ethics
- ethics can be examined of organizations and code of ethics.
- personal ethics

In this chapter we are concerned with decision making among


organizations.
Mass media employees have 5 ethical duties:
- duty to self.
- duty to the audience
- duty to employer
- duty to professional colleagues
- duty to society
In most cases ethical problems management are complex.

Because decision making is a challenging process for many reasons, some


of these factors are:

- ethical decisions have extended consequences.


- ethical decisions have many alternatives
- decision making often have ,mixed outcomes
- uncertain consequences
- personal implications
- ethical norms provides a means of making informed decisions
Ethical Norms are defined as a set of theories
derived from the study of ethics and ethical
principles.
They are useful:
- They provide a philosophical foundation from
which to analyze ethical situations and make
intellectually defensible judgments.
What is a 'Code Of Ethics'
A code of ethics is a guide of principles designed to help
professionals conduct business honestly and with integrity.

Code of ethics and professional conduct:


1- Responsibility- is our duty to take ownership for the
decisions we make or fail to make, the actions we take or fail to
take, and the consequences that result.

2- Respect- is our duty to show a high regard for ourselves,


others, and the resources entrusted to us. Resources entrusted to
us may include people, money, reputation, the safety of others,
and natural or environmental resources

3- Fairness- is our duty to make decisions and act impartially


and objectively. Our conduct must be free from competing self-
interest, prejudice, and favoritism.

4- Honesty- is our duty to understand the truth and act in a


truthful manner both in our communications and in our conduct.
5- Independency
is a state where a company professionally managed
without conflict of interest and pressure of the management tha
t is
not accordance with the regulations and principles of healthy
corporate.

6- Accountability is clarity function, structure, systems, and


responsibility of the company organs so the management work
effectively
Ethics in news and public affairs
In the reporting of news and public affairs, many types of a ethical
concerns confront news the managers and management.
- Questions of truth and accuracy.
- Right to privacy.
- Citizen journalist.
- Conflicts of interest.
- Confidentiality of sources.
- Pressure from advertisers.

Ethics in sales and marketing:


The sales or marketing department also requires a list of ethical
responsibilities:
- Responsibility to audience.
- Responsibility to one's conscience.
- Responsibility to costumer.
- Responsibility to community.
- Responsibility to company.
