FIRED THERMAL POWER PLANT
PROJECT WORKING PROGRESS
GENERAL INFORMATION

 Project Name :- Siddaca Faage 137.5MW biomass fired

thermal project
 Location:- Siddaca faage (12 km away from awash 40
town)
 Employer:- Metals and Engineering Corporation New
Business Development
 Contractor:- Grace Engineering P.L.C
 Consultant:- MH Engineering P.L.C
STG PILE FOUNDATION WORKING
PROGRESS
 STG area have 305 pile foundations.
 For steam turbine generator and condenser 66
piles & for main building 239 piles
 56 pile foundations are casted on STG area the
remaining piles have on progress.
 The pile body adopts c-30 reinforced concrete
used.
 Drilling 80cm diameter pilling halls up to the 24m
depth and concrete cover 7.5cm .
THERMAL POWER PLANT SITE LAYOUT
CONT.
 Pilling halls used temporary casing in order to
protect collapse during concrete filling.
 All mobilization and setting out working
according to the drawing and approval of the
engineer.
 STG pile foundation around 18% have finished.

 With in 70 days 56 pile foundations are casted it

takes more days due to drilling machine problem.
HOW TO CONTROL THE WORK
 To Collect elevation data of platform, top casing, rebar
elevation, easting and northing coordinate and check
they satisfied design requirement
 Check main reinforcement diameter, length, center to
center spacing, spiral reinforcement diameter, stiffening
ring reinforcement & concrete cover properly placed
according to the drawing.
 Check workability of concrete visually and also by
taking slump test
PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED & ACTIONS
TAKEN
 The recommended end bearing piles on the STG block
were revised as follow
 After a hard strata was not found up to a depth of 29m.
-The end bearing piles changed into frictional piles
- The length of the piles increased from 20m to
24m.
- The diameter of the piles changed from 60cm into
80cm.
-After the revision of the pile diameter the distance
between neighboring piles reduced it may affect the
frictional property of the pile.
CONT.

 There is an elevation difference in the plant layout plane

which varies from 762m to 756m.
 There is no satisfactory drawings of electrical, sanitary
and mechanical drawing in order to check whether there
is an embedded parts or not which may be installed in
parallel with concrete work of substructure on boiler
block and STG block.
 RUNH they did not supervise the civil work according to
the agreement.

DESIGN ISSUES
 There is no design for main building ground floor slab and
hard core
 There is no design supper structural main building
architectural and structural working drawing.
 For steam turbine generator and condenser already given the
supper structure design but not shows clearly the embedded
part code or drawing. For example 2D1515A,
GL50(around)A,2G2020A,8T1010A,8GL63(30) and other
codes.
 There is no design for construction working drawing
thermal plant area for example switchyard, cooling tower ,
water treatment , chimney and others.

ACTIVITIES ON SITE AND
PROBLEMS
137.5MW BIOMASS THERMAL POWER
PLANT
INTRODUCTION

 In this presentation we try to give explanation for activities on

site and problems we faced during our work on site and design
study.
 In addition, to request company for every documents necessary
for installation and maintenance, and design/drawing
documents for 137.5MW power plant systems.
 We try to explain according to the following points: -
- Equipment's availability,
- Design,
- installation and maintenance documents,
- Equipment maintenance,
ACTIVITIES ON 137.5MW BIOMASS THERMAL
POWER PLANT

 Availability of STG system equipment’s according to

packing list and on site delivered equipment,
 Availability of electrical & mechanical BOP system
equipment’s according to packing list on sit delivered
equipment’s,
 Identify plant system design,
 preservation equipment’s and rotate turbine and
generator rotor,
 STG, electrical and mechanical BOP, Equipment
visual inspection and pre-maintenance activities.
PROBLEMS ACCORDING TO EQUIPMENT'S

 During our inventory of equipment on site it was not easy

for us to differentiate the same equipment's name but they
have different types and applications area, such
equipment's are pipes, pumps, valves and others,
 Equipment are not available based on the schematic
design, completeness of equipment's, such as de aerator
surge tank.
 Not provided or delivered package for STG, electrical &
mechanical BOP equipment list,
 Undelivered equipment such as Overhead crane, de
aerator surge tank, and others,
CONT.
 On packing equipment list most of the equipment’s are
mentioned only by their names i.e. they are not mentioned
with their system and types,
 Some accessories are not delivered like bolt and nut,
 Equipment’s are not mentioned with their specification on
packing equipment list.
 Some name description and its packing list No of
equipment are not matched.
 To overcome with solution for this problem, we
request your company to deliver the remaining
equipment according equipment package list.
PROBLEMS ACCORDING TO DESIGN

 Completeness of design is major problem we

faced during our design study,
 Some schematic drawing, detail drawing and
assembly drawing is not available for some
systems of power plant,
CONT.

 So, we request your company for complete design and

clarification for some systems and their sub systems of power
plant,
 It is mandatory for us to have detail, schematic and assembly
drawing for each systems of power plant,
such systems are: - STG,
- Mechanical BOP,
- Electrical BOP, switch yard
 Short term training and supervisions for designs.

note
systems and their sub systems basic, detail and assembly
drawing with their availability are explained well on
drawing checklist.
PROBLEMS ACCORDING TO DOCUMENTS

Available documents that we have from your

company is not enough for maintenance and
installation.
 Equipment erection/installation, assembling,
and maintenance manuals for each plant systems
and sub systems.
 Equipment quality certification documents.
PROBLEMS ACCORDING TO MAINTENANCE

 During our visual inspection for equipment in

container and shelter on site we observe the
following: -
- Equipment are not properly packed,

- Damaged equipment,

- Corrosion,

- Missed equipment accessories,

EQUIPMENT NOT STANDARDLY PACKED
DAMAGED PARTS
CORROSION
MISSED EQUIPMENT ACCESSORIES
CONT.

 for above listed problems we request your company to

provide: -
- Deliver missed accessories and damaged
equipment,
- Testing equipment necessarily and certifying,
- Experts,
- Maintenance training,
- Maintenance manual
- Maintenance plan,
- Maintain each system equipment,
THANK YOU
