LESSON 3.1 – language of algebra☺
• Variables- one of most important concept in algebra.
Can stand in diff. nos. and times.
• Substitution-replacing variable by constant.
• Algebra- branch of mathematics that involves expression
with variables.
• Algebraic expression-result of combining numbers and
variables.
• replacement set- set of values of the variables.
• Constant-a symbol which has exactly one no.
• Factors- nos. and symbols in a product.
• Literal coefficient-letter used to represent a no.
Lesson 3.2- classifying algebraic
expression☻
• Polynomials- a algebraic expression that represents a sum of one or
more terms containing whole-no. exponent or variables.
ONE TERM- monomial
TWO TERM-binomial
THREE TERM-trinomial
• Degree of a term that has only 1 variableis the exonent of that
variable.
• Degree of polynomial that has only 1 variable is the highest power
appearing in anu of the term.
• Degree of a term that has more than 1 variable is the sum of the
exponents of the variables.
• Degree of polynomial in more than 1 variable is the highest sum of
the exponents of the variables in any of the terms.
Lesson 3.3 – evaluating algebraic
expression

• Evaluating polynomial-finding the value.

• Ex :
x=7 , 4 – 3x + x = 4 + 3(7)+(7)7
= 4 – 21 + 49
= 32
Lesson 3.4 – adding polynomials
• To add two polynomials , write the sum and simplify by
combining like terms. The following properties can be
used to find the sum of polynomials.
• Ex:
4a + (3a-8) = (4a + 3a)
= ( 4 + 3) a -8
= 7a - 8
Lesson 3.5- subtracting polynomials

• To subtract an expression from another

expression , add its negative. That is , A –
B = A + (-B)
LESSON 3.6 – PRODUCT OF
monomials
• LAWS OF EXPONENTS :
☺ product rule for exponents :
To multiply powers having the same base , keep the base and add the
exponents.

☺ power rule for exponents :

To find the power of a power of a power of a base , keep the base and
multiply the exponents,

☺ power of a product rule :

To find the power of a product , find the power of each factor and then
multiply the resulting powers.
Lesson 3.7 – product of monomials
and polynomials

• Note that you can use distributive property and the laws
of exponents to find the product of a monomial and
polynomial.

• To multiply a polynomial by a monomial , multiply each

term of the polynomial by the monomial.
Lesson 3.8 – product two or more
polynomials

• Foil method- another method for finding the product of

binomials with like terms.

• The outer & inner products in the FOIL method are often
like terms. Hence, once you become proficient in using
the FOIL method , you can easily combine them w/o
writing them and the product of two binomials mentally.
Lesson 3.9 – division of monomials

• To simplify the qoutient of 2 monomials ,

find the quotient of their numerical
coefficients , the find the qoutient of their
variables.
Lesson 3.10 – division of polynomial by a
monomial
• To divide a polynomial by a monomial ,
divide each term of the polynomial by the
monomial and simplify the result.
• When a ,b ,c are real nos. ,and c is not
equal to 0 , then
a+b = a + b
c c c
Lesson 3.11 – division of polynomials
by another polynomial

• RULES :
♥ Arrange the term of both the dividend and the divisor in either
ascending or descending order.
♥ Divide the first term of the dividend by the first term of the divisor . &
write the result as the first term or the quotient.
♥ Multiply the entire divisor by the number obtained in step 2 & subtract
the product from the dividend. The remainder will be the new dividend.
♥ Divide the new dividend by the first term of the divisor as before , &
continue to divide in this way until the divisor is exact or until the
remainder is of a part of a lower degree than the divisor.
♥ If there is a remainder , write it over the divisor and add the fraction of
the part of the quotient previously obtained.
