9. How much should be given?
God loves cheerful givers. If saints give liberally, they will be blessed liberally (II Cor 9:6). A tithe should be the minimum, since it was the minimum before and during the Law. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
10.Should they give by gross or net
income? Gross income is what you were paid; you received many benefits for the taxes deducted. You should give proportionately of your gross income. However, it boils down on your conviction and conscience. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
11.Does the New Testament Church
legally require Tithes? NO Now, since we’re now in the Law of Grace/Love. We give “tithes or more” not because it is a legal requirement but because we love and acknowledge him as our Lord and King. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
12. But the New Testament does not
require a tithe? And the New Testament does not mention corporal punishment, but you use the O.T. principle to train your children ( Prov. 13:24;19:18;22:15; 23:13-14; 29:15). It does not mention saving money, but you do so from Solomon (Pr 6:8; 30:25). It does not mention many godly rules or principles, which may be assumed from the O.T. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
But the tithe was not abolished, as was the
Sabbath. The Sabbath was not pre-Moses, was for Israel only, and was clearly abolished according to Paul. Tithing was pre-Moses and not rejected by Paul, thus remaining as a GUIDE. That is right, but Paul did appeal to the Law of Moses for principles of financial giving, which shows the remaining validity of the principles pertaining to giving (I Cor 9:8-9; II Cor 9:9; I Tim 5:18). 14.What if I cannot afford to give? Aren’t some people just too poor to tithe?
The Bible indicates that if we have an
income we should respond with our tithe and offerings. Prov. 3:9 The devil wants to keep people in poverty and ignorance – God wants to bless them. Some pastors feel that they just can’t teach tithing because there are single parents in their churches who just can’t afford to tithe. (See 1 Kings 17:9-16 “Widow in Zarepath”) EXAMPLES OF GENEROUSITY IN THE BIBLE 1. Joseph and Mary, though poor, brought two turtle doves for our Lord's dedication (Luke 2:22-24; Lev 12:8). 2. Jesus took note of a widow giving two very small copper coins over rich men giving much (Mark 12: 41-43). 3. Moses required a soul offering of every citizen without regard for ability to give (Ex 30:15). 4. The Philippians gave generously, though they were comparatively poor (II Cor 8:1-5). The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives. Deut 14:23TLB Be sure to set aside a tenth… so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always. Deut 14:22-23 Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine. Prov 3:9-10 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS 13.What if I do not give? • You rob God, and you will suffer (Hag 1:1-11; Mal 3:8-12; II Cor 9:6; Gal 6:7). • You don’t acknowledge him as your Lord and King in your life. • Everything you have is from the Lord, and you should willingly give some back. One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed. Proverbs 11:24-25 Other Miscellaneous Questions Are we required to give tithes to our Home Church? Ans: No, it depends on your heart’s decision. Who will keep the Tithes and Offerings? Ans: Church Treasurer or depending on the discretion of the Church. Is the Tithes and Offerings for the Pastor only? Ans: It’s intended for those who are working for God’s Kingdom (e.g. Pastor, Missionary, etc.) COMMON OBJECTIONS ANSWERED 1. Tithing is not necessary under this current dispensation of grace. “If the ‘grace’ you have received does not help you to keep the law, you have not received grace.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones While it is true that we now live in a dispensation of grace, that grace was purchased at a tremendous cost. It did not free us of all obligations to Christ. BOTTOMLINE: As Christians, we can’t afford to withhold what is for God. Matt 25:35-40 I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?’…"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' 2. Tithing is only an Old Testament teaching, and is not applicable in the New Testament.“ Scripture records several ceremonial obligations, such as the law of animal sacrifices, which are no longer binding upon the New Testament church (Heb. 9:8–10). These were types (shadow) that were fulfilled by Christ at his first advent. However, tithing was instituted for a specific purpose and not as a type. • There are many scriptures in the New Testament showing where the ceremonial law of God was fulfilled and no longer applicable to the church, but there is no scripture stating that tithing in no longer necessary. 3. Tithing was only required of Jews, not Gentiles.
• The vast majority of our Bible was written to
the Jews. • All of Jesus’ words were spoken to Jews. That does not mean we can disregard them because we are not Jews. • “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4) 3. Tithing was only required of Jews, not Gentiles. • First, the payment of tithe recognizes that God is our owner, our Creator, and that it is He who gives us power to get wealth. • Second, we are now under Christ’s priesthood, which is superior and succeeds to the Melchizedek and Aaronic priesthoods. • Therefore our tithes are now to go to Him."Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest forever after the order of Melchisedec. "-Hebrews. 6:20. 3. Tithing was only required of Jews, not Gentiles. • Just as Christ’s priesthood succeeded the Aaronic and Levitical priesthoods, which were supported by the tithes of Israel, and as Christ was made a priest after the order of Melchisedec, who received tithes of the patriarchs before the Levitical priesthood was ordained, it is but logical and natural to conclude that the ministry under Christ’s priesthood should be supported by the same means as were both of these priesthoods—the tithes of God's people. • Tithes paid to God's ministers down here are actually paid directly to Christ."And here men that die receive tithes; but there He receiveth them, of whom it is witnessed that He liveth."-Hebrews 7:8. 4. Before the Law of Moses, tithing was done on a voluntary basis. All true worship of God is voluntary on our part. That was true before, during and after the Law of Moses. No one makes you attend church. No one forces you to be baptized. No one makes you live a holy life. Similarly, no one can compel you to tithe. That does not mean that it’s optional either. The grace of God allows us to obey all of God’s Word and not just the parts we like. 5. Only food products from the land were “titheable”; money was never a “titheable” item. • There is certainly no scripture that excludes money as a “titheable” item. In fact, the scriptures say that you are to give tithes of all your increase (II Chron. 31:5). • In the agricultural society of Moses day, the primary source of wealth for people was their crops and animals. This was their source of income. • God is laying out a principle that you are to tithe from your source of income. Thank you for Listening! To the faithful servants he said, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
The words, “Well done” are only spoken to those who manage their money Christianly!
