HOW IT WORKS AND USE AVOMETER

DEFINITION OF AVOMETER

Avometer or Multimeter is a measuring instrument used to

measure electrical voltage, electric current, and resistance.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
The advantage is easy in reading with a more simple view.
While the drawback is low accuracy.
PARTS SECTION
SELECTOR & SCALE
1. The top left is a DC Volt selector block.
This is the selector block we should select
when doing DC voltage measurements.
2. The top right is the AC Volt selector block.
This is the selector block that we must
choose when measuring the AC voltage
3. Bottom right inscribed Ohm unit to
measure resistance
4. The lower left reads DC mA used to
measure DC currents. Maximum current
measured 250 milli Ampere DC. the use
of the measurement limit must be above
the approximate current value in the
circuit.
HOW TO USE
1. Before measuring we must know what kind of voltage we will measure, whether
AC voltage (alternating current) or DC voltage (direct current).
2. By knowing the type of voltage we can determine the placement of selector on
the AC or DC.
3. If the voltage we are going to measure is the AC voltage direct the selector on the
AC part.
4. If the voltage we are going to measure is the DC voltage then direct the selector
to the DC section.
5. If we do not know what kind of voltage it is, to be safe in the measurement we
should direct the selector to the AC part (since the DC voltage is actually part of
the AC voltage).
CALIBRATION
HOW TO CALIBRATION AN AVOMETER
Connect the two ends of the probe to one. If the needle has
not been able to point the scale at the rotary zero point
ohm ADJ until the needle shows zero. If it can not be set to
zero, then the battery in multimeter need to be replaced.
MEASURING RESISTANCE
1. Put the selector or limit (BU) of the most appropriate resistance. Select the
resistance limit so close to the middle of the scale. For example: with the scale
shown below with a resistance of about 1ohm
2. Next Calibrate the measuring instrument first
3. Calculate the measured resistance value
R = BU x JP
R = measured resistance (ohm)
BU = Measure Limit used
JP = Needle design on scale
MEASURING AC/DC VOLTAGE
1. Calibration the avometer.
2. Move the selector to ACV/DCV area.
3. Choose the highest range to avoid damage in avometer (because choosing the
lower range).
4. Connect the avometer with circuit in parallel ways. Put the red probe to positive
power source. Meanwhile, put the black probe to negative power source.
5. When measuring DC Voltage, please be careful, because the DC voltage has a
polarization.
6. Read the scale that showed by the needle.
How to read the scale that showed by needle:
Measured Voltage = (Selector/The highest scale was choosen) x The Number that
appointed by needle

Selector: 2.5
The Highest Scale was Choosen: 250
The Number that appointed by needle: 110 (Attention the scale 0-250)
Measured Voltage:
(2.5/250)x 110 = 1.1 Volt
MEASURING CURRENT
1. Calibration the avometer.
2. Move the selector to DCA area.
3. Choose the highest range to avoid damage in avometer (because choosing the
lower range).
4. Make the circuit became an open circuit.
5. Connect the avometer with circuit in series ways. Put the red probe to terminal that
close to the resistor. Meanwhile, put the black probe to terminal that close to the
power source.
6. Read the scale that showed by the needle.
