What is an ERP? How is it used to
customize any business process?

•ERP acronym for Enterprise Resource Planning

•Enterprise Resource Planning systems integrate all data and processes of an

organization into unified system.

•The key feature of an ERP system is it uses a single or unified database to store
data for the various system modules.

•ERP is generically modular software consisting of application modules that

include Manufacturing ,Supply Chain ,Financials CRM, Human Resources
Warehouse management
What are the advantages and
disadvantages of ERP system?
Major Advantages of ERP:
• ERP is an integrated business solution that integrates all the application
components on a common platform
• The applications are seamlessly integrated and share a common data base
• ERP helps tracking the business on real time basis
• ERP provides advanced security features compared to other software
applications.
• These security features protects data both from insider crime and outsider
crime.
Major Disadvantages of ERP:

• Re engineering of business process to fit the “industry standard” prescribed

by the ERP system may lead to a loss of competitive advantage.

Customization with reference to an
ERP Product and why ERP has to be
customized for a Business?
ERP Customization

• ERP solution is developed for a generic enterprise considering the possibility

of mapping widest range of business processes as per the specific requirements
of industry, business and country
• ERP solutions are delivered with complete coding for business logic along with
RDMBS for managing the real time business data.
• So when an Enterprise purchases ERP solution there is not much of need to
develop the application coding but the product has to be adjusted to the specific
business processes that form the particular business
• Hence ERP product provides a mechanism by which standard settings
maintained in the ERP product can be altered to suit the specific business
requirements. The process of adopting ERP to specific requirements of
business is called as Customization
• SAP as ERP product provides highest flexibility in customization and also
system enhancement

What is Business process? What is
customization and its need
Business Processes & Customization

• In a conventional business, the organization, management and control of the

business is done through business functions
• When business adopts an ERP product, the approach shifts from business
functions to business processes
• Business process is basically definition of a how a business activity or many
interconnected business activities happen together, and can be traced from
start to finish and also be aware of what variables can affect the business
process
• Business can be considered as a sum total of various core business processes
which are interconnected so as to form end-to-end business process.
• A process can be measured; variables can be identified and can be
continuously fine tuned so as to develop best business practice.
Why business processes are
considered in ERP customization?
Customization –Business process

• ERP product is process oriented and provides seamless

integration of business processes so that data can easily from one
process to another process.
• However business process designed in ERP system may not
match exactly with business processes that exist in each and
every business. So Standard ERP product has to be adjusted
using a mechanism called customization
• Customization involves changing the control settings of the
system without altering the source code so as to achieve a very
close fitment of existing business process and its mapped version
in the software
