 The present progressive is also called the “present

continuous” or the “continuous present”


 The Present Progressive or Continuous is used to
discuss on going situations that have started but
have not yet come to an end: It's raining (Esta
lloviendo). This verbal form is often used to describe
situations that we have before our eyes or that we
know that they are making while we speak.
 Therefore, very often the Present Progressive is
accompanied by adverbs or adverbial expressions as
now, at the moment, at present, currently.
 Rule 1
A consonant + -e  drop the –e add –ing
Smile  smiling
Write  writing

 Rule 2
One vowel + one consonant  double the consonant and ADD –
ING
Sit  sitting
Run  running

Exception: Do not double consonant w, x and y


Snow  snowing  not snowwing
Fix  fixing  not fixxing
Say  saying  not sayying

Don´t double the consonant

 The Present Progressive or Continuous is a
verb form Composite, so the two elements (
the auxiliary and the present participle ) are
required.
Be + verb (ing)
This compound one for the auxiliary TO BE, conjugated
in function of the subject, and for the form of present
participle of the main verb (verb+ing).

BE + -ING
Am, is, are = helping verbs
Sitting = the main verb
Am, is, are + -ING

Example:
 Am + ing  I am reading the book.
 Is + ing  He is sitting in class right now.
 Are+ ing  We are playing tennis.
 The negative form of the Present Progressive
consists on the negative form of the verb TO BE
accompanied for the presently participle of the
main verb.

 A movie. (Ted is watching a movie).

 Because I like this program. (I’m watching TV
