SCHIZOPHRENIA

ISABELLA KUNSAK
WHAT IS SCHIZOPHRENIA?

• Very disabling brain disorder

• Affects how a person feels, behaves, and thinks
• Lose touch with reality
• Hallucinations and delusions
• Abnormal thought process
SCHIZOPHRENIA SUBTYPES

• Paranoid Schizophrenia
• Disorganized Schizophrenia
• Catatonic Schizophrenia
• Undifferentiated Schizophrenia
• Residual Schizophrenia
PARANOID SCHIZOPHRENIA

• This is the most common subtype

• Cope better with illness
• 25-30 years of age
• Life controlling superstition and prominent auditory and visual hallucinations
• Have a specific theme or characteristic
DISORGANIZED SCHIZOPHRENIA

• thinking process
• Unable to keep up with daily activities
• controls the persons emotional process
• Can impair their ability to communicate successfully
CATATONIC SCHIZOPHRENIA
• A persons body movements
• It can cause a drop in activity (catatonic stupor)
• Or to where activity dramatically increases (catatonic excitement)
• Symptoms:
• Bizarre posture,
• Unusual facial expressions
• Childlike mimicking of someone's words
• Mimicking of someone's movements
RESIDUAL SCHIZOPHRENIA

• When the patient no longer has severe symptoms of schizophrenia but still have delusions and
hallucinations
UNDIFFERENTIATED SCHIZOPHRENIA

• Have many symptoms of Schizophrenia but don’t fit into a specific subtype
HOW DOES SOME ONE GET SCHIZOPHRENIA?

• Most commonly runs in families

• Caused with abnormalities in the genes
• Very hard to track who is at high risk for developing this disorder because doctors
cannot yet use genetic information to track Schizophrenia
• The person’s environment and genetic interactions can develop Schizophrenia
• Exposure to viruses, birth complications, malnutrition before birth, and psychosocial
factors.
• Prime time to develop physiological issues: ending stages of major brain development
in childhood and during puberty
THE GENETIC CONNECTION
• They closet gene is the C4 gene to Schizophrenia origination
• This gene makes a protein called C4 and it helps our immune system function
• C4 can be found in different regions and forms throughout the body. But scientists found that the highest
levels of C4A was found in the brains of Schizophrenia patients
• Most commonly C4 is found at the synapses of nerve cells and helps to promote a process in the brain called
synaptic pruning
• Synaptic pruning is when our nerve cells get rid of all the extra connections we do not need any more so our
brain can have a better performance
• In most people this occurs in the late teens years and beginning of adulthood
• Note that this is when most symptoms of Schizophrenia starts
• To much synaptic pruning can damage mental function
EARLY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF
SCHIZOPHRENIA IN CHILDREN
• Children:
• Language delays
• Late walking
• Late/unusual crawling
• Abnormal “motor” behaviors
• Rocking and arm flapping
EARLY SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA IN
TEENS

• Withdrawal from family and friends

• Drop in school performance
• Trouble sleeping
• Irritability and depressed mood
• Lack of motivation
• Strange behavior
• Substance use
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA IN ADULTS
• Delusions
• Hallucinations
• Disorganized thinking
• Childlike behavior
• Lack of response
• Bizarre posture
• No change in facial expression
• Neglect for personal hygiene
SYMPTOMS

• present between 16 – 30 years of age

• Men usually develop this brain illness at younger ages than women
• Isn’t common to get Schizophrenia after the age of 45
• When a child is developing schizophrenia their symptoms will be very light, but may gradually build up.
These early signs may be so faint that you could not notice what is wrong or you might just say that
these signs are part of their developmental phase.
TREATMENT

• Medications:
• Seroquel
• Abilify
• Zyprexa
• Risperdal

• Physiological therapy
SCHIZOPHRENIA

• can spread from gene to gene

• can damage other genes as it progresses and becomes more controlling
• You are at a much higher risk of developing this disease if:
• Family has a background of mental illness or Schizophrenia
• If you have high immune system activity like inflammation or possess autoimmune diseases
SCHIZOPHRENIA

• Affects about 1 in 100 people

• 1% of America’s population has Schizophrenia that’s 2.4 milllion
• 10% of people who have Schizophrenia commit suicide
• 50% of Schizophrenic people have a drug or alcohol abuse problem
• 1.5 million people are diagnosed a year with Schizophrenia
