Objectives: At the end of the session, the
students are expected to:

1. show the relationship of the sides of the

triangle to develop Pythagorean Theorem;
2. state and explain Pythagorean Theorem;
3. find missing sides of right triangles using
Pythagorean Theorem;
4. determine if a triangle is a right triangle given
the three sides of a triangle; and
5. solve word problems involving the concept of
Pythagorean theorem to real life situation.
In your groups, I will give each group an
illustration board and a chalk for you to write the
letter of your answer. I will read the question
twice. After 5 seconds, the bell will ring, and you
should raise your cardboard. Late answers are
not anymore accepted. Each question is worth 2
points. The group who can gain more points will
be declared as the winner.

Question:
6. What do we call a statement
in geometry that requires
proof?

A. Postulate B. Theorem
C. Corollary D. Law
Answer
This game is called “4 PICS, 2 WORDS”.
Each group has the chance to answer it
correctly, but you have to raise your flaglet.
The first group who can raise their flaglet
will be the one to be accepted by teacher to
answer. If the answer is correct your group
will receive 5 points. However, if the answer
is incorrect, other groups have the chance
to answer it correctly and acquire the points.

PYTHAGOREAN
THEOREM
GROUP ACTIVITY

Side of Right Length of (Length of

Triangle the Side the Side)2
Shorter leg (a)
Longer leg (b)
Hypotenuse (c)
GROUP ACTIVITY

Guide Questions:
1. Given the right triangle, complete the
table above.
2. Add the squares of the two legs and relate
or equate it to the square of the hypotenuse.
What is their relation?
3. Write the relation to mathematical
statement.
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM:

In a right triangle, the square of the
hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares
of the two legs. c2 = a2 + b2 where c is the
hypotenuse.
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

CONVERSE OF THE PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM:

If the square of the longest side of a triangle is equal
to the sum of the squares of the other two sides, then the
triangle is a RIGHT TRIANGLE.
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

IT’S TRIVIA TIME !

A little trivia, Pythagoras is a Greek
Mathematician who investigated this type of
theorem. This famous theorem was then
named after him by his followers. The
Pythagorean Theorem was considered as
one of the best known and most useful
theorems in all of mathematics.
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

A part of a right triangle is missing, can we

find the missing side?
What should we use?
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

Suppose the hypotenuse is missing given that

the height(a) of a right triangle is 27 inches
and the base(b) is 36 inches. What is the
length of the hypotenuse?
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

Solution:
Given:
a= 27
b= 36 Apply the Pythagorean Theorem
c= ? Substitute and then simplify

c2 = a2 + b2
c2 = 272 + 362
c2 = 729 + 1,296
c2 = 2,025
c = 45 inches
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

In a right triangle ABC, if b =16 and

c=20. What is the shorter side(a)?
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

Solution:
Given: b=16
c=20
a=?
c2 = a2 + b2
202 = a2 + 162
400 = a2 + 256
400 – 256 = a2
144 = a2
12 = a
40
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

The lengths of the sides of a triangle are

5, 9, and 12 units. Determine whether the
triangle is a right triangle.

What we are going to use?

LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

The lengths of the sides of a

triangle are 5, 9, and 12 units.
Determine whether the triangle is a
right triangle.
What we are going to use?
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

We will use the converse of the

Pythagorean Theorem sir. We will
verify whether or not the square of
the longest side is equal to the sum
of the squares of the other sides.
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

Since 122 = 144 and 52 + 92 =

2 2
106, we found out that c ≠ a + b 2

therefore the triangle is not a

right triangle.

mathematical equation?
LESSON ( Building Your Understanding)

Can this be
applied to any

did you do to make it a successful
one?
Are these traits important in every
endeavour of our life?
