CATHODIC PROTECTION

A Corrosion Control Process

By GOHER MAQSOOD
Operations Engineer
IMPACT OF CORROSIONS

Corrosion is the deterioration of a material,

usually a metal, because of a reaction with its
environment.
Corrosion is a major
Economic, Environmental,
and Safety Problem which
adversely affects our Nation, as
well as many of our facilities.
THE VALUE OF CORROSION
CONTROL

• Reduced Maintenance and

Repair Costs
• Better Safety
• Better Appearance
HOW TO CONTROL CORROSION
Corrosion Control Methods
• Protective Coatings
• Design
• Environmental Control
• Material Selection
• Cathodic Protection
COATING
• Normally first line of defense against
corrosion: provides barrier between a
corrosive environment and the structure.
• No coating is perfect and consists of
holidays (voids) often resulting from
improper application and/or damage.
• Cathodic Protection often used in
conjunction with coatings to protect the
holidays or voids in the coating system.

CATHODIC PROTECTION
• An electrical method of
controlling corrosion on metallic structures that
are exposed to electrolytes such as soils and
waters

• A technique to reduce the corrosion of a

metal surface by applying an external
electromotive force so that the entire surface
becomes the cathode of an electrochemical
cell.

HOW MUCH CATHODIC PROTECTION

• The Polarized Potential Should

Be Between -850mV And
-1100mV Measured Between
The Structure And A Copper
Sulfate Electrode (CSE).
