PENYATUAN NEGERI-NEGERI MELAYU &
PENAMBAHAN SINGAPURA
 Antara ciri persekutuan Tanah Melayu yang ada pada Malaysia adalah kedua

duanya menggabungkan negeri-negeri Melayu dan negeri negeri selat.

 Namun semasa pembentukan Malaysia pada 16 September 1963, Singapura

telah bergabung dengan Tanah Melayu, Borneo dan Sarawak untuk

membentuk Malaysia.

 Lee Kuan Yu adalah antara pemimpin yang teruja dengan pembentukan

Malaysia dan sememangnya ingin bergabung dengan Tanah Melayu. Beliau

telah berusaha meyakinkan Tunku Abdul Rahman untuk menerima Singapura.

 “ the Malayan Union Scheme was designed with the consideration in Mind. Under the

plan a peninsula union was to be created. Comprising the nine Malay states and the

settlement of Penang and Malacca but not Singapore.”

- Penubuhan Persekutuan turut dipengaruhi oleh perangcangan MU kerana tidak

memasukkan Singapura.

- Pada awalnya semasa percubaan meubuhkan MU, singapura diasingkan kerana

masalah penduduk china banyak di Singapore akan melebihi orang2 Melayu di Tanah

Melayu tetapi apabila Borneo dan Sarawak masuk masalah tersebut dapat diatasi
“ By 1941 the Malays were already outnumbered in their own country: 1.9 Million

Malays to 2.0 Million n0n Malays”

 Penerimaan kepada Singapura untuk menyertai gagasan adalah apabila masalah

majority dan minority kaum dapar diselesaikan dengan kemasukan Borneo

 Dengan kemasukan Borneo jumlah orang Melayu akan bertambah melebihi 4 juta

berbanding 2.0 juta sebelum kemasukan Borneo

“ If the Borneo territories were added to the associations, the total 3.7 million Chinese would

be outnumbered by some 4 million Malay from the Federation and another 200 000 from

Singapore, the addition of the Borneo territories would add another 176 000 Malays mainly

from Sarawak and Brunie and 700 000 indigenous people North Borneo”
 Semasa percubaan penubuhan Malayan Union (MU), pengasingan

Singapura telah mendapat kritikan dari pelbagai pihak seperti akhbar dan

parti politik.

“ Singapore’s exclusion from the Malayan Union evoked only subdued criticism

from newspapers, like The Straits Times, Malayan Tribunes and Singapore Free

Press and “feeble Moves” from newly form and still struggling political parties”
 “ The more important point is a psychological one. If Singapore is included in the

union from the outset it will established itself as the centre of union afraid the Malays

would have to be sensation while they have felt and resented in the past, or being

governed from an alien city. If however Singapore is in the early stages excluded

from the Malayan Union is placed at Kuala Lumpur in the Malay states, the

evaporation of the Malays in making the union a reality will be much easier to

obtain.”
 Lee Kuan Yu berpendapat penyatuan Singapura dalam gagasan Malaysia akan

memberi kelebihan dan keistimewaan kepada Singapura selain dapat membantu

negeri tersebut dalam isu politik dan ekonomi

 POLITIK

- Lee Kuan Yu menyokong penglibatan Singapura dalam membentuk gagasan

Malaysia adalah salah satunya dapat membantu menyelamatkan PAP (People’s

Action Party) yang tergugat kerana tidak dapat mengusahakan kemerdekaan

untuk Singapura.
 “ the mobility to achieve independence for Singapore on the other hand would

put the PAPs own political survival at risk. Since the 1959 self-governing

constitution was due for review in 1963 with independence as the most logical

step.”

 Selain itu, dari sudut politik, penyatuan Singapura dengan PTM dapat membantu

Singapura dan PAP’s untuk menghapuskan pengaruh komunis di Singapura.

 “ Merger was politically beneficial to the PAP’s for another reason: it is

erstwhile left-wing communist would be politically neutralize in a Malaya

headed by a right-wing and anti-communist government”

 Singapura akan diberikan satu kerakyatan “istimewa”. 624 000 rakyat

singapura yang lahir di luar Singapura tidak dimasukkan dan tidak

memerlukan untuk memenuhi syarat2 seperti “non malay” yang lain di

persekutuan”

 Hal ini dilakukan oleh kerajaan persekutuan untuk mengurangkan

“bahaya” Singapura yang ditakuti oleh Tunku Abdul Rahman.

 “this were design to reduce the danger of Singapore Chinese

threatening the political dominance of the Malay-dominated Alliance

in Malaya”
 Rakyat Singapura akan dikekalkan kerakyatan sebagai

“singaporean”. Mereka tidak boleh bertanding atau menjai calon

selain di Singapura.

“Singapore agreed to a more limited number of seats than its

population warranted , 15 instead of possibly 24.”

 Sebagai balasan Kuala Lumpur bersetuju, hak hak istimewa orang

Melayu di Malaya tidak diguna pakai di Singapura.

“Kuala Lumpur accepted that “special privilege” accorded to their kith

and kin in Malaya would not apply in Singapore”

 Kerajaan Persekutuan bersetuju untuk menjalankan tanggungjawab

dalam keselamatan.

“ The broad principles agreed on 23August 1961 envisaged Kuala

Lumpur bearing responsibility for defence, external affairs, and security

while Singapore “laid particular strem” on the necessity of it retaining

local autonomy especially on matters of education and labour”

EKONOMI

 Dari sudut ekonomi Singapura memerlukan penyatuan ini untuk membantu

Singapura dari sudut ekonomi

“Singapura needed the federation to provide a bigger common market for its

manufactured goods”
