For the JE, as of 2015, the examination consists of written test only
(Paper I and Paper II). There is no interview and final selection will be
made on the basis of merit in written examination only.
CDSE/ AFCAT
Indian army has special technical entries for engineering students
but there are other Indian army entries which engineering students
can apply.

TGC – Technical Graduate Course : The most popular entry for


engineering students to join Indian army after engineering is TGC
entry, TGC entry is conducted by Indian army two times every year
and engineering candidates get shortlisted based on their
percentage till 6th semester. TGC entry is only for male engineering
students and one gets permanent commission through this entry.

SSC- Technical: This is a similar entry like TGC entry but the main
difference is that it is for short service commission and not for
permanent commission. Both male and female candidates can apply
for SSC- Tech entry which is conducted by Indian army twice every
year.
AFCAT & CDS
AFCAT stands for Airforce Common Admission Test and CDS
stands for Combined Defense Service Examination. Both are
written exams which are followed by a SSB (Service Selection
Board) in order to select suitable young boys and girls for the
Defense forces of India.
AFCAT is conducted by the Indian Airforce twice an year whereas
CDSE is conducted by the UPSC (Union Public Service
Commission) twice an year.
Through CDS, an engineering student can enter the Indian Army
or Navy as a non-Technical entry.
Indian Engineering Services comprise of engineers who work under
the government of India and designated as Class – 1 officer.

The first position offered is that of Asst. Executive Engineer and the
hierarchy ends at the position of Chairman/ Managing Director.

An all India level competitive examination, called Engineering


Services Examination (ESE) is conducted every year by the Union
Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment to the Indian
Engineering Services. The Examination constitutes of a written
examination followed by an interview for the personality test. The
recruitment of qualified candidates is made under the following
categories:
• Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering
• Electrical Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Civil Engineering
The various services in which recruitment is made through ESE
include Indian Railways, Central Engineering, Central Water
Engineering, Border Roads Engineering, Indian Defence Service of
Engineers, Indian Ordinance Factories, Central Power
Engineering, Indian Naval Armament Service, Central Electrical &
Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Telecommunication
Engineering, Indian Telecommunication Service, Wireless
Planning & Co-ordination Wing etc.

In 2016, the number of vacancies are approximately 602

ESE 2017 onwards, there will be 3 stages in the selection process:


• Preliminary examination ( Stage 1) consisting of 2 multiple
choice question papers
• Mains (Stage 2) consists of 2 conventional type papers from the
respective engineering disciplines
• Personality Test (Stage 3)
Higher Studies as a Career Option
o National University of Singapore & Nanyang Technological
University, Singapore recognise GATE scores for admission to
masters.
o Seats for all IITs in postgraduate program in engineering – 2788
(around 1762 for ME, Electrical & Electronics Engineering and CSE).
o Centrally funded institutes (like the NITs, IIITM Gwalior, NIFFT
Ranchi, and IIEST Shibpur) conduct Centralized Counseling for M.
Tech/M. Plan (CCMT). Total number of seats under CCMT is
around 8982 spanning in 38 institutes.
