Introduction
 Water injection has been one of the most effective methods to improve oil recovers as it can
be used to maintain the reservoir pressure and displace oil toward producers.
 Due to excess water production from coning, breakthrough in the water flooding process
that ultimately causes the abandonment of oil field.
 Smart well technology (ICVs) are believe to be the most important technology in order to
enhance sweep efficiency and maximize oil recovery.
 Reservoir simulator Eclipse 100 is used to model the reservoir and control the ICV action in
the injection well.

Scope of work
 In Pakistan there are many fields where this technique can applied to drain the
reservoir efficiently.
 This work focus on Smart Well Technology which can increase in oil recovery
resulted in a subsequent increase in NPV (Net-Present Value) justifying its
economic viability.
 In current economical scenario of petroleum industry smart well completion is
best technique to use in an oil-wet system than water-wet system and also it is
better with a stimulated well than damaged formation (Positive Skin)

Problem statement
In most of the cases the water flooding in heterogeneous reservoirs can cause
the water fingering resulting early water break through and affect the
production performance of a reservoir by excessive water production which
leads to abandonment of the oil field.

6
Proposed solution
Smart well technology is the better solution which can reduce injection in
efficiencies such as water fingering and it is achieved by the use of a
reservoir simulator to model an intelligent injection well by placing ICVs
vulnerable zones with high possibilities of water fingering.
Reactive control strategy (RCS) was adopted to help control the
movement of the injected water as a displacement fluid to delay water
fingering and hence increase oil recovery.

SMART WELL TECHNOLOGY
 When inflow control valves are used on wells they are called
smart wells
 Smart well technology is a non-conventional well with
downhole instrumentation (Sensors, valves and inflow
control devices) installed on the production or the injection
tubing.
 Smart well technology gives us the opportunity to counteract
the effect of high permeability zones that have high influence
on the recovery because they can cause early water break
through and trapping of by-passed oil.
8
Objectives
 To minimize unwanted fluid production by using Smart well technology
through Simulation.

 To enhance sweep efficiency and To increase ultimate oil recovery.
