Topic 1: Introduction; What is Sports
Science?

 Sport Science is a discipline that studies the applications


of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of
improving sports performance and increasing in healthy
lifestyle.

 The study of sports science traditionally incorporates


areas of physiology, motor control and biomechanics.

 Othertopics that also are related includes nutrition/diet,


sports technology, sports injury, anthropometry and
performance analysis.

 Sports scientists and performance consultants are


growing in demand and employment numbers, with the
ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on
achieving the best results possible.

 Through the study of science and sports, researchers


have developed a greater understanding on how the
human body reacts to exercise, training, different
environments and many other stimuli.
The Study of Sports Science
 Higher-education degrees in sports science or human
physiology are also becoming increasingly popular with
many universities now offering both undergraduate and
postgraduate degrees in the discipline.

 Opportunities for graduates in these fields include


employment as a physical education teacher,
dietician/nutritionist, performance analyst, sports coach,
physical therapist, fitness centre manager, sports
administrator or retail manager of a sports store.

 Graduates may also be well positioned to undertake


further training to become an accredited physiotherapist,
exercise physiologist or clinical exercise consultant.
Philosophy of Sports
 What is Philosophy?
 Greeks defined Philosophy as the “love of wisdom” &
philosophers as “lovers of wisdom”.

 Though everyone may be a philosopher to some degree


philosophy DOES have a point.
 “Philosophic argument attempts to clarify matters by ridding
everyday language of ambiguity and vagueness”.
 For better understanding of the issues and perhaps even a
solution to stubborn problems.
 Why is it important?
 Most of us recognize the importance of various arts and
sciences.
 Art in its various forms (including sport?) add fullness, variety,
beauty, and flavor to our lives.
 Science makes discoveries that contribute to our health and
comfort.

expressed a rudimentary interest in matters of

What is the Philosophy of Sport?
 Philosophy of sport is an area of philosophy that seeks to
conceptually analyze issues of sport as human activity.

 Its also concerned with the conceptual analysis and


interrogation of key ideas and issues of sports and related
practices.

 Philosophy has been historically been divided up into five sub-


disciplines:
1. Metaphysics - study of what is real
2. Epistemology - study of the theory of knowledge
3. Aesthetics – study of beauty
4. Ethics – study of how we ought to live
5. Logic – study of argument analysis

 The philosophy of sport not only gathers insights


from the various fields of philosophy as they open up
our appreciation of sports practices and institutions,
but also generates substantive and comprehensive
views of sport itself.
Code of Ethic in Sports
 What is a Code of Ethics?
 A code of ethics defines what is considered good and right
behaviour.
 It reflects the values held by a group. These values are usually
organized into a series of core principles that contain
standards of behaviour expected of members while they
perform their duties.
 It can also be used as a benchmark to assess whether certain
behaviours are acceptable.

 The world is connected in Sports culture with millions of
individuals across different countries.

 Sports bring new challenges and new life lessons.

 There is variety of sports played around the world.

Sportsmanship and Its Value
 Sportsmanship is a matter of being good and doing right
in sports.
 Sportsmanship looks like Playing fair
 Respecting the judgments of officials
 Treating opponents with respect

Doping in Sports
 The use of banned performance enhancing drugs in sports is
commonly referred to as doping particularly by the
organizations that regulate sporting competitions.

 Lance Edward Armstrong is an American former professional


road racing cyclist was caught engaged in doping.

 Michael Fred Phelps is a retired American swimmer and won


a 22 gold medals in Olympics .
