 udv  uv   vdu

• Apply integration by parts usually when the integral

contains the product of two different functions.

 f ( x ) g ( x )dx  ?
• The objective of integration by parts is to generate a
new integral which is easier to integrate than the
original integral.
• To achieve that, need to choose u and dv expressions
wisely for the LHS.

Integration by parts – example 1
Evaluate the following integral :

2x

Answer:
Apply integration by parts:

 udv  uv   vdu
We can choose u = x or u = e2x.
Let see what happens when we let u = x
Need expressions for v and du

Integration by parts - tips

 f ( x ) g ( x )dx  ?
u  f ( x )  du  f ' ( x )dx
dv  g ( x )dx  v   g ( x )dx

 udv  uv   vdu

Integration by parts - tips

 udv  uv   vdu
• When using integration by parts, keep in mind that you are
splitting up the original integrand into two pieces.
• One of these pieces, corresponding to u, will be differentiated and
the other, corresponding to dv, will be integrated.
• Since you can differentiate virtually every function you run
across, you should
o choose a dv which you can integrate and
o Choose u and dv that will result in an easier integral for vdu.
• If possible, choose u = x so that you get the simple du = dx.
• You will learn what works best by working through lots of
problems.

Rule of thumb (LIATE) when choose u :

1) Log
2) Inverse trigo
3) Algebraic function (i.e. polynomial of the form xn
where n > 0)
4) Trigo
5) Exponential
