OVERVIEW
This series of LABSTAT Updates present statistical briefs
on cases of occupational injuries and diseases that affected
workers in establishments in 2013. The statistics came from
the 2013/2014 Integrated Survey on Labor and
Employment (ISLE), formerly BLES Integrated Survey
(BITS), conducted in 2014 by the Philippine Statistics
Authority (PSA) in coordination with the PSA Regional
Offices.

OVERVIEW
The ISLE is a nationwide survey covering 8,399
establishments with 20 or more workers in 69 industry
groups.

CASES OF OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES
IN CONSTRUCTION Y2013
• There were a total 2,115 reported cases of occupational injuries in the
construction industry in 2013.
• temporary incapacity cases (24.8% or 524) and fatal cases (0.05% or 1).
• More than half (58.3% or 306) of the 525 cases of occupational injuries
with workdays lost in the construction industry were caused by
superficial injuries and open wounds. Other types of injuries include
foreign body in the eye (12.4%); fractures (10.1%); and dislocations,
sprains and strains(7.2%).
• The parts of the body commonly injured in the construction industry
were wrists and hands (42.3%)
• Laborers and unskilled workers were the mostly injured in the
construction industry posting the highest share at 70.1%.

Indirect cost includes:
• Time away from the Job not covered by the workers’
compensation insurance
• Payment of other workers who are not injured,
(those who stopped work to look after and help the
injured)
• The cost of Damage and Materials or equipment
involved in the accident
• The cost of Overtime imposed by the accident
( Lost production, additional supervision, and
additional heat etc.)
• The cost of wages to the supervisors and other
personnel for time spent on activities related to the
accident
• Cost of legal settlements..etc.
