• C8 Conclusion
Cases
• We have had over 250 people or family members report
their diagnosis of cancer on our facebook page Satellite
Beach Health and Hope for Tomorrow. The health
department reports they received over 500 phone calls
with approximately 300 cases reported. However, these are
rough estimates and difficult for statistical significance.

SEER DATABASE
• Why use it over FL Cancer Registry Comparison?
SEER is # Cases per year for 100,000

(So if Satellite Beach population is 18,500- every 5.4 years we should have that many cases)
Cancer Type Seer Total expected over # Years Reported from Over Aggressive?
Incidence Satellite Beach Area

GU (testicular) 0.3/100,000 Over 8 years should have 2 Yes Usually

0.4 cases
(Satellite
curative, rare
should have to be fatal
0.05 cases per
year)

Breast (Age 15-39, all 21.4/100,000 Over 3 years should have 13 Yes Can be fatal
diagnosed within 3 11.7 cases
years) (Satellite
should have
3.9 per year)

GI (appendix) 0.3/100,000 Over 8 years should have 3 Yes Can be fatal

0.48 cases
(0.06 per year
x 8 years)
SEER is # Cases per year for 100,000
Cancer Type Seer Total expected over # Reported from Over Aggressive?
Incidence Years Satellite Beach
Area

ALL (Leukemia) 4/100,000 Over 3 years should 3 (2000 Decade) Yes Can be fatal
(2007, 2008, per year have 2.22 cases
2009) 4 (2010 Decade)
(Satellite Yes
2014-2016 (4 should have
children) 0.74 cases
per year)

Brain 1/100,0000 Over 8 years should 5 Yes Usually

(GBM/Astrocyto so 0.185 have 1.48 cases always fatal
ma) case per

“Military Times Article- “In all, the tiny neighborhood by Patrick in 1991
discovered at least 12 cases of Hodgkin’s tied to people who had lived there
between 1967 and 1983. The Orlando Sentinel called the cases “an
unusually high incidence” of the extremely rare cancer, which affects about
8,500 people in the United States each year, according to the American
Cancer Society.”
HODGKIN’S LYMPHOMA
Cancer Type Seer Total expected over # Reported from Over
Incidence Years Satellite Beach Area

Hodgkin’s 3.5/100,000 Over 8 years should have 8 (2010 decade) Yes

Lymphoma per year 5.12 cases

(Satellite
should have
0.64 cases
per year)

Hodgkin’s 3.5/100,000 Over 16 years should 12 Yes

lymphoma so 0.64 cases have 10.24 cases
(previous suspected per year in
cancer concern in satellite However for SPS- 16 (over if include all
South Patrick years should have had Satellite beach and
Shores) South Patrick 1/3 cases due to lower way over for South
Shores was population so 3.41 cases Patrick shores)
estimated at over 16 years, but SEER
6000 people data wasn’t available in
then* 1990s.
SEER is # Cases per year for 100,000
(Adding in Adults can help with rare cases)

Cancer Type Seer Total expected over # Reported from Over

Incidence Years Satellite Beach Area

Kidney and All 15.9/100,000 Over 10 years should 6 No

• NHL is Linked With Environmental Concerns
PFOA Animal Research
Lymphohematopoietic malignancies
are linked to environmental agents!
Questions to be Answered:
• What other trends will we find in the data?
• Final mapping of the cases in progress!
• Statistical significance?
• What (if anything environmental) is causing this pattern of possible
increased cancer in younger adults?
• How can the local and state health department help us with a
formal investigation?
• Can our blood be tested for the PFOA/PFOS chemicals like some
states are currently testing?
• Can screening guidelines be made to help those who may have
been exposed catch cancer earlier?
• Can our local, state, and federal agencies and politicians help us
with this? Please continue to write them!
• How else can we save lives?
Thank you for your time!
• Just a reminder- Please still pass on the
word to anyone diagnosed in this area,
especially under the age of 40!
• They should call Brevard Health
Department to log their case and also
join our facebook group Satellite Beach
Health and Hope for Tomorrow where
they should also log their case for us so
we can help advocate for them as well!
• We have plans to start a facebook
survivor group only as well for updates
to survivors.
• Thank you to all the volunteers helping
me- especially Stel Bailey, Whitney
Prieto, Victoria Sitting, Jennifer Erfe,
Decade Leaders listed to the right!
• Now on to the experts and community
officials!
