Major Categories of Computer Software
System Software
• is software on a computer that is
designed to control and work with
computer hardware.

• types of system software

– operating system
– utility software
What is an Operating System (OS)?
• An operating system or OS is a software
program that enables the
computer hardware to communicate and
operate with the computer software.
• Without a computer operating system, a
computer and software programs would be
useless.
Types of OS
Stand-Alone Network OS Embedded OS
OS
Windows Windows Windows
XP, Vista NT, CE
Mac OS Windows Palm OS
Linux Server 2000 Symbian OS
DOS Linux Embedded
UNIX Linux
Solaris
Functions of OS
• Starting a computer. The process of starting or
restarting a computer is called booting.
• Provide a user interface. We interact with
software through its user interface. That is,
user interface controls how you enter data
and instructions and how information is
displayed on the screen.
– Types of user interface:
– Command Line Interface (CLI)
– Menu Driven Interface
– Graphical User Interface (GUI)
• Managing programs. Some operating systems
support a single user only one running
program at a time. Others support thousand
of users running multiple programs.
• Managing memory. The computer’s operating
system is responsible for managing memory
such as:
– Allocating data and instruction to an area of
memory while being processed.
– Monitoring the contents of memory.
• Configuring devices. A driver, short for device
driver, is a small program that tells the
operating system how to communicate with
specific device.

What is Utility Software?
• is computer system
software intended to
analyze, configure,
monitor, or help
maintain a computer.
Typically a utility is
smaller than
an program in size and
may be included with
an operating
system or installedsepar
ately.
List of Utility Software
• Antivirus • File manager
• Backup software • Hex editor
• Clipboard • Memory tester
• Compression utililty • Network monitors
• Cryptography software • Package manager
• Debuggers • Registry cleaners
• Disk checkers • Screensavers
• Disk partition editors • System monitor
• Encryption tools
Types of Utility Programs
• Built in
– Windows explorer
