Prompt sequence, relative
coordinate, Ortho, Tracking,
Osnap

1
Using the Prompt Sequence
• When some tools are called, a long
sequence of prompts occur at the command
line.
• Example:

Command: circle
Specify center point for circle or
[3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]:

2
Using Ttr of the Circle tool
• Instruction: Draw these 3 circles:
Circle 1: Radius 50, Center point (90,210)
Circle 2 : Radius 50, Center point (270,210)
Circle 3: Radius 75, tangent to Circles 1 & 2.

Firstly, draw circle 1:

• Command: circle
• Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan
radius)]: 90,210
• Specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: 50

3
Using Ttr of the Circle tool
Secondly, draw circle 2:
• Command: circle
• Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]:
270,210
• Specify radius of circle or [Diameter] <50.0000>: 50

Now draw circle 3:

• Command: circle
• Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: t
• Specify point on object for first tangent of circle:
• Specify point on object for second tangent of circle:
• Specify radius of circle <50.0000>: 75

5
Using Relative Coordinate entry
• Previous exercise of entering coordinate
points is know as absolute coordinate
entry.
• The x,y figures of a relative coordinate
always starts with @.
• Try the following exercise of relative
coordinate entry using Line tool.
6
Notes
• When working in coordinate units:
+ve X:horizontally to the right,
+ve Y: vertically upwards
-ve X: horizontally to the left
-ve Y: vertically downwards
• Angle figures are preceeded by <.
• The default direction in which angles in degrees are
measured is counterclockwise.

7
Example
• Command: line
• Specify first point: 50,260
• Specify next point or [Undo]: @70,0
• Specify next point or [Undo]: @10,-40
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @30,0
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @10,40
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @70,0
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @0,-230
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-70,0
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-10,40
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-30,0
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-10,-40
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-70,0
• Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: C

Drawing perfect horizontal and vertical
lines using ORTHO
• By clicking on the ORTHO button in the
status bar (alternatively press F8),
• Lines can be added to a drawing only
in a horizontal or vertical direction.
• Up,down, left, right only.

9
Object Snap (Osnap)
• Suppose you want to draw a line from the
center of the circle to the middle of the
vertical line.
• AutoCAD has a feature that makes this
very easy. These are the Object Snaps
(or Osnaps). Type OS <ENTER> . You
will see a dialog box appear.
• F3 shortcut

…Object Snap (Osnap)

11
You may select whichever points you want to 'snap'
on an object. Here is a list of your options..
• Endpoint - snaps to the beginning / end of an object - END
• Midpoint - snaps to the exact middle of a line or an arc - MID
• Center - snaps to the center-point of a circle or arc - CEN
• Node - snaps to 'nodes' (not covered in this course) - NOD
• Quadrant - snaps to any of the four quadrants of a circle - QUA
• Intersection - snaps to the point where two object cross - INT
• Extension - Snaps to the phantom extension of an arc or line - EXT
• Insertion - snaps to the insertion point of an object (such as a block or text)
- INS
• Perpendicular - will snap so that the result is perpendicular to line selected
- PER
• Tangent - snaps to create a line tangent to a circle or arc - TAN
• Nearest - will find the closest point an object and snap to that point - NEA
• Parallel -Snaps parallel to a specified line - PAR
• None - temporarily turns off all Osnaps. (Pressing your F3 Key is quicker) -

Adding Text using text command
1) Enter the command text into the command console then ENTER
2) When prompted for a start point, select somewhere in the screen just
left of centre
3) When asked for a height, enter 5
4) When asked for a rotation angle, hit enter to accept the default of 0.
5) Now simply enter your text. Type: CHE414 then hit ENTER to start a
new line. Type: ENGINEERING DRAWING
6) Hit ENTER twice to exit the text command.
The text should be on two separate lines.

Write your name and student

number on your assignment.
