Relations and Functions

Standard: UNDERSTAND that a function is a rule that

assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph
of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of
an input and the corresponding output.

Note: Function notation is not required in Grade 8.

A ________
relation is a set of __________________.
ordered pairs

Relation = { (3,5),(-2,8),(-3,8),(0,-6) }

domain is the ______

The ________ set of ______
x values.

The ________ set
is the ______ y
of ______ values.
EXAMPLE

Relation = { (3,5),(-2,8),(-3,8),(0,-6) }

Domain: { ____, ____, ___, ____}

Range: {____ , ___, ____}

A ___________
function is a relation in which no number in the

_________
domain is __________.
repeated (the x-value can not

repeat)

Functions can be represented four different ways:

1. ______________
mapping

2. ______________
graph

3. ______________
table

4. ______________
set of ordered pairs
