Overview of UL CoMP
 UL CoMP is coordinating multi-point transmission and reception. UL
CoMP uses multi-antenna reception in uplink.

 This feature mainly improves the UL throughput of cell edge users and
average UL throughput of a cell.

eNodeB uses antennas in different cells for

uplink multi-antenna reception to mitigate
interference and improve the throughput of
Cell 1 the users in cell edge.

Application Scenarios of UL CoMP
 UL CoMP is applicable to the users in cell edge. the eNodeB can
select cell edge users automatically and apply the UL CoMP
process to them to obtain signal combining gain and interference
mitigation gain.
eNodeB can judge whether the user is in cell edge
based on the measurement report. If the user is in cell
edge, eNodeB can apply UL CoMP to the user.

Typical Application Scenario 1 of UL CoMP
 Scenario 1: A UE's signals are expected to obtain signal
combining gains from UL CoMP.

 For simplicity, such a UE is called a type-1 CoMP UE.

combining gains and
interference mitigation gains
for type-1 CoMP UEs.

Typical Application Scenario 2 of UL CoMP
 In this scenario, UE1 in cell1 is near the edge of cell0, as shown in
the figure. UEs 0 and 1 share some resource blocks (RBs).
Therefore, UE1 signal causes interference to UE0.

 UE0's signals are expected to obtain intra-eNodeB interference

mitigation gains from UL CoMP. For simplicity, such a UE is called
a type-2 CoMP UE.

Scenario in Which UL CoMP is not
Applicable

Key Techniques for UL CoMP
 The UL CoMP feature uses the following key techniques:

Selecting CoMP UEs
 The eNodeB can select cell edge user for CoMP based on
reference signal received power (RSRP) reported by UE. If the
RSRP of a UE is small, the eNodeB considers this UE to be a cell
edge user.
RSRP of serving cell and neighboring cells is included in A3 event
report. Based on the RSRP values the eNodeB judges whether the user
is in cell edge.

Joint Reception by Antennas of Multiple
Cells
 Basically there are two algorithms for multi-antenna reception
combining:
 IRC (Interference Rejection Combing)

 MRC (Maximum Ratio Combining)

• In scenario 1
adaptive
MRC: applies to environment with white noise MRC/IRC is
used.
• In scenario 2
IRC: applies to environment with colored interference
IRC is used.
• The interference caused by the cell edge user is more
similar to colored interference.

Joint Reception by Antennas of Multiple
Cells (cont.)
 UL CoMP differs from multi-antenna reception in the following
ways:
 UL CoMP uses four antennas from two cells: serving cell and
coordinating cell of a UE. Multi-antenna reception uses four antennas
from only the serving cell of the UE.

 UL CoMP does not require additional antennas or radio frequency (RF)

channels because the eNodeB can use the existing antennas.

 When a UE or the interference source of the UE is on the cell edge,

UL CoMP can achieve a great amount of gain for the UE signals.

Evolution of UL CoMP
 Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP
 Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP, an eNodeB uses the antennas of two cells in
a site to receive UE signals.

 Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP Phase II

 In BBU interconnection scenarios, multiple sites can be deployed on a
BBU.

 When the switches of both the Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP Phase II and

Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP features are turned on, intra-BBU intra- and
inter-site UL CoMP services can be provided in BBU interconnection
scenarios.

Evolution of UL CoMP (cont.)
 UL CoMP based on Coordinated BBU
 In BBU interconnection scenarios, a universal switching unit (USU)
connects multiple BBUs; multiple sites can be deployed on each BBU.

 When the switches of UL CoMP based on Coordinated BBU, Intra-

eNodeB UL CoMP, and Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP Phase II are all
turned on, the following UL CoMP services are available in BBU
interconnection scenarios:

 Intra-BBU intra-site UL CoMP

 Intra-BBU inter-site UL CoMP

 Inter-BBU intra-site UL CoMP

 Inter-BBU inter-site UL CoMP

Required Features for UL CoMP
 UL CoMP requires the following features:

UL IRC (UL ICIC (Inter-Cell

Interference Interference
Rejection Combining) Coordination)

• Interference • Except for the offset for

mitigation gain from UL event A3, all A3
CoMP depends on UL parameter settings for UL
IRC in scenario 2. CoMP are the same as
those for ICIC.

Required Features for UL CoMP (cont.)
 Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP Phase II depends on Intra-eNodeB
UL CoMP and takes effect only when the two features are
both enabled.

 UL CoMP based on Coordinated BBU depends on both

Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP and Intra-eNodeB UL CoMP Phase
II and takes effect only when the three features are all
enabled.

Mutually Exclusive Features with UL
CoMP
 UL MU-MIMO
 UL multiple user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) requires
good UL channel quality of UEs, which are not on the cell edge. UL
CoMP, however, requires that UEs be on the cell edge. These two
features are mutually exclusive.

 The following features should be disabled if UL CoMP is used in

one cell.
 Ultra-High speed mobility

 UL frequency hopping

 Remote radio RRUs

Deployment Requirements
 Two or three cells, for which UL CoMP is to be enabled, must be
configured on the same LBBP.

 These cells must operate on the same frequency and have the
same bandwidth.

 These cells cannot be operating with UL frequency hopping

enabled, configured as ultra-high speed cells, or served by RRUs.

 To ensure UL CoMP performance, the recommended distance

between the sites of the serving cell and coordinating cell is less
than 1000 m. otherwise, UL CoMP is not recommended.

 The license for UL CoMP is activated.

 Step 1: On the M2000 client, choose
Monitoring > Signaling Trace >
Signaling Trace Management. In the
navigation tree, choose Trace Type >
LTE > Application Layer > Uu Interface
Trace to create a Uu interface tracing task.

 Step 2: Enable UE to access the cell1, for

example, performing a service on the UE.
 The eNodeB sends the A3 measurement
configuration to UE for UL CoMP.

 Step 3: On the M2000 client, check for an

RRC_CONN_RECFG message in the Uu interface tracing
result. Open the message and find the value of the
information element a3-Offset, as shown in the figure.
 If the A3 measurement configuration can be found in the
message, UL CoMP has been activated.

 Step 4: Move UE to the cell edge. (If in lab, the signal

quality on the cell edge can be simulated by adjusting an
attenuator.)

 Step 5: Use UE to perform UL File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

services, and check the UL throughput of UE.
 Under the same test conditions, if the UL throughput is higher
than when UL CoMP is disabled in the cell, UL CoMP is
working correctly.
