OBJECTIVE

 To develop Brain computer-interface (BCI) technologies

to restore the communication, mobility, and Independence
of people with neurologic disease, injury, or limb loss.
INTRODUCTION

What is Brain gate Technology?

 It is a mind-to-moment system that allows a
quadriplegic man to control a computer
using his Thoughts.
Development
Brain Gate Technology developed by Bio-tech company Cyber
kinetics in 2003 in conjunction with the department of Neuroscience
at Brown University.

Nicholas Halso
Neuro chip

 A 4-mm square silicon chip.

 Chip uses 100 hair-thin electrodes
that ‘hear’ neurons firing in
specific areas of the brain.

BCI
 One way BCIs
 Two way BCIs
HUMAN RESEARCH

 Invasive
 Partially Invasive
 Non Invasive
INVASIVE
 Implanted directly into the brain during neurosurgery.
PARTIAL INVASIVE
 Implanted inside the skull but rest outside
the brain
NON INVASIVE
 Electroencephalography(EEG)
 Hat Allows Computer Control By thought..

Working:- Motor cortex

 Brain Gate uses a

sensor that is
implanted onto the
motor cortex of the
brain.
Software behind brain Gate…..

• The computer translate brain activity and create the

communication output using custom decoding software.
 System uses translation algorithms written in
1) C++
2) JAVA
3) MATLAB
Neuromotor device
A boon to the
paralyzed

Mathew-Nagel the first person to

use the brain-computer
interface to restore functionality lost
due to paralysis…
Statement Of Nagle

• “I can't put it into words. It's just—I use my

brain. I just thought it. I said, "Cursor go up to
the top right." And it did, and now I can
control it all over the screen. It will give me a
sense of independence.”
Advantages
 Controlling remote devices
 Playing computer games
 Making and receiving telephone calls
 Accessing the internet
 Turn on or off the lights
 Control robotic arm
 Locking or unlocking the doors
Disadvantages
 Expensive
 Not wireless yet
 Risky surgery
 Limitation in information transform rate. The latest technology
in 20 bits/min
Future scope
 Smaller and wireless devices.
Conclusion
 The idea of moving robots or prosthetic device not by manual
control, but by mere “thinking”(i.e., the brain activity of
human subjects) has been fascinated approach.
 Medical cures for unavailable for many forms of neural and
muscular paralysis.
