MASS MEDIA IN EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION
Mass media are informal agencies of education. They are called mass media because they
impart education to large masses simultaneously. Mass media make the educational
programmes more universal, effective and meaningful. They also provide means of
entertainment. The three functions of mass media are providing information ,socialising
and mobilizing. Mass media include radio, TV, news papers, films, audio & video cassettes
etc. Educational media are carriers of messages from some transmitting sources to the
receiver of the message. These carriers of information interact with the receptors that are
learners, in the educative process through his senses.
 Mass media has been universally
characterized by four attributes .
 These are :-
1. Broad appeal
2. Speed
DEFINITION 3. Availability
The mass media are diversified media 4. Low cost
technologies that are intended to reach
a large audience by mass
communications .
Importance of Mass Media

A. Mass media provide information to the mass within a less time .


B. It takes a wide coverage of information regarding anything that is happening in any
corner of the world.
C. It brings the entire world to the individual or to the class room. Children spend hours
together sitting in front of the TV and can visualize , hear and acquire knowledge about
the world.
D. These media easily reach groups, allow repeated use ,give more reality, influence
attitudes , show cause and effect relationships and ultimately motivate the audience.
E. It sends information to remote places and helps in distant learning.
F. Mass media acts as an agency of social change.

RADIO

 Radio acts as the medium of mass-communication. It is used mainly to broadcast events


to far and wide places of the world. It is also a very important source of entertainment.
Everyday, we listen to various talks, discussions and debates from radio. These are
important and useful for the students. Especially for the purpose of teaching, many
programmes are broadcast over the radio. So radio acts as a great recreational and
education force. It broadcasts scientific and cultural facts. It enlightens public opinion.
It stimulates curiosity and interests. The radio has proved a valuable supplement to
class teaching and learning Educational broadcasting is comparatively a new
experiment and is catching on well. The educational programmes are broadcasting by
the expert teachers with effective methods which demonstrate new ideas and
approaches to classrooms.
ADVANTAGES
1. Educational radio broadcasts provide listening participation in current history.
2. Educational radio broadcasts are effective means of presenting music, drama and
appreciation.
3. Educational radio broadcasts are team-teaching demonstrations.
4. Educational radio broadcasts enlist the participation of local teachers and pupils.
5. Educational radio broadcasts helps in the long run, to make learning an open system.
Educational Television (ETV)
 Education TV is the use of television programme in the field of distance education. It
may be in the form of individual TV programmes or dedicated specially channels that is
often associated with cable TV in the United States as public, educational, and
government access (PEG) channel producers. Many children television series are
educational, ranging from dedicated learning programmes to those that teach the
viewers. There are also adult education programmes for the older audience, many of
these are instructional or tele-course services that can be taken for college credit.
Examples of these include open university programme on BBC TV in U K.
ADVANTAGES
i. Educational television is capable of making available many needed and so far inaccessible
learning experiences.
ii. Educational television brings about continuing co-operative planning by teachers,
supervisors, learning materials exports and skilful production teams.
iii. Educational television brings us a new kind of teaching team in to existence.
iv. It can acquaint the children with past culture, history and social life.
v. It can motivate both children and adults, because not only it is educative but also
entertaining.
NEWSPAPERS JOURNALS
Newspapers are usually for a mixed age A journal refers to the periodical publications
group of readers and carry items of new and like magazines. It also helps people in
current affairs. They contain sections for acquiring knowledge. E-journals are
various categories of people. digitalized journals which we can read on the

CONCLUSION
 Mass media have proved to help in classifying concepts, stimulating group and
individual activities, developing a collective critical awareness, changing attitudes,
imposing a new structure or organization on certain subjects and encouraging
originality and creativeness. Therefore, teachers have to be properly motivated and
made interested in the use of such materials.
