• Entrance Procedure
– Handout (Chemical Physical Changes Lab)
– Binder/Journal
– Complete Catalyst within 10 minute time-frame
• Write the title (Chemical and Physical Changes)
and the date
• Respond: Turn to Page 433 of the red Active
Chemistry textbook and fill out the “What do
you think?” on your lab handout.
Agenda
• Catalyst
• Lab Prep
• Chemical & Physical Change Lab
• Lab Conclusion
• Extension: homework
• Closing
Objective
• Students will…. Differentiate
between chemical and physical
changes by making observations
and citing evidence of chemical
reactions
Physical vs. Chemical
Changes
What’s the Difference?
• Matter can change
• Examples: Freeze, cut, burn, etc.
• 2 types of changes
1. Physical changes
2. Chemical changes
Physical Changes
• Matter changes form WITHOUT becoming
something new
– You start and end with the same thing (see
below)
• Examples: cutting, freezing, melting, etc.
Molecules in Physical Changes
Chemical Changes
• Matter changes, becomes NEW substance
– Start and end with different things
• Usually irreversible (can’t change back)
• Examples: burning, rusting, milk going
sour
Molecules in Chemical Changes
• The atoms
arrange to make
a new substance
Chemical Change = Reaction

 Reactants: starting • Products: the

solutions in a reaction resulting solutions in
a reaction
Signs of Change
• Physical • Chemical
– Size – Temperature
– Shape – Color
– Texture – Bubbles/fizzing
– Phase Change – Smoke
– Smell
– Precipitate
