Second week

report
Introduction:
In this week we have been able to visit two sites:
Green Plaza and Alex West under supervision of
eng./M.Gomaa and eng./M.labib respectively.
We could learn some practical informations about water and gas
systems which have been used in these sites.
1-Green Plaza:
In this site we could be familiar with the water system as well as
CO2 system.
For water system there are three types of pipe material have
been used : Steel,PVC,HDPE .
Flexible joints are used for under ground pipes to avoid changes
in elevation.
In order to protect each building separatelly a zone control
valve have been used for each building.

flow
tamper detector
switch

test &drain
valve

OS&Y valve
There are three pumps used in this site:electric driven and
deisel driven centrifugal pumps plus a jocky pump used for
pressure maintenance.(network pressure = 8bar)
A flexible joint is used to prevent vibration transmission from
pumps to the tank
Main pressure relief is used with the deisel driven pump .

A return line is used to test the pumps with a flow meter

attached to it.
A hydrants & siamess are used to help the civil defence in case
of great fire

An angle valve is used with hydrants and fire hoses.

For Gassystems there are two types :CO2 & FM200
Where CO2 system is used in a place where there are no humans or
electronic equipments .
Cylinders are classified into:Master & slave.
Master cylinder is actuated through a solenoid valve and then
the discharge gas is directed through header to the first slave
cylinder where there is a pilot line used to cause a back ressure
on the diaphragm to allow the gas to be discharged through the
header.
Fire Sensors / Smoke Detectors
Wireless and wired varieties of fire sensors are installed in
buildings according to the nature of fire risk..

Types of Detectors:
• Wireless smoke detector
• Photoelectric smoke detector
• Ionization type smoke detector
• Heat detector
• Combined heat & smoke detector
Kitchen system:
Kitchens are protected by using potassium carbonates.
• This system is being activate using a fusible link connected to
a pin in the cylinder valve through a wire in thin tube.
• A shut off valve can be used to stop the flammable gas
through cylinders control board.
2-Alex West:
In this site we could be more familiar with the water system and its
installation.
• The type of pipe used is seemless steel pipes.
• The optimum distance between the upright sprinklers and the
ceiling is 10:15 Cm.
• Minimum distence between the sprinkler and the wall is 70 Cm.
• Pipes with diameters of 2 in max.can be fitted with threads.
other dia. is fitted by welding.
• An OS&Y valve ,Strainer and alarm check valve are used as a Z.C.V.
Third week report
Introduction:
In this part of our training we became aware with the main
components of FM200 systems as well as water-foam solution
system.

FM200 was used to protect the switch gear room of ELAB

because of the electronic and electric equipments.
Steel seemless pipes are used with victolic coupling for fitting.
FM200 system must maintain the following:
• Nozzel pressure.
• Response time.(10 sec. max.)
• Concentartion.
Some times an external nitrogen cylinder is used to activate the
master cylinder in case of not using solenoid valve.
Water-Foam system is used to protect tanks and vessels
contain flammable liquids.
There will be always two networks:one for colling(water only)
and the other for fighting (water foam solution). By using linear
heat detectors on the colling pipe network.
Deluge systems
"Deluge" systems are systems that have open sprinklers. These
systems are used for special hazards where rapid fire spread is
a concern as they :
• provide a simultaneous application of water over the entire
hazard.
• They are commonly seen as preventative measures to prevent
egress of fire from an external source .
Turbine is used to form the water foam solution.
• On ships with fixed propellers a dedicated diesel driver or
electrical or hydraulic driver may be used to avoid impact
from ships operation to the fi-fi system.
• The pumps are normally located in the engine room below
water line for best possible performance via suction line
design. They deliver water to the discharge pipe going all the
way up to the monitor on top of the bridge or similar good
position.
• The system may also include self-protection deluge system
(Water Spray) with water taken from the fi-fi pumps and / or
various types of foam systems.
