KEEPING GOD AT HEART
– Deut. 8:18, Psalm 14:1
• "And you shall remember the LORD your
God, for it is He who gives you power to
get wealth, that He may establish His
covenant which He swore to your fathers,
as it is this day.“ – Deuteronomy 8:18
• The fool has said in his heart, "There is no
God." They are corrupt, They have done
abominable works, There is none who
does good. – Psalm 14:1 (NKJV) 3

What does it mean to remember God?

• But in the Bible context, it means more

than just being able to recollect an image or
event.
What does it mean to remember God?2
• Mentally, who can forget God? Ps. 19:1-3
says “The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Day unto day utters speech, And night unto
night reveals knowledge. There is no
speech nor language Where their voice is
not heard. Nature is a constant reminder of
God
What does it mean to remember God?3
• However, Ps. 14:1 says The fool has said in
his heart, "There is no God." They are
corrupt, They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.
• To remember God means celebrating,
commemorating, praising and pleasing God
for who He is to us.
• It means to be lovingly conscious of God in
our daily living. This means being faithful as
to marriage vows. A function of the heart.
Why the Caution and Charge?
• One may wonder why did Moses have to warn
the Israelites and charge them to remember God?
• Three reasons why Moses must have cautioned
them. First, because of his experience of the
Israelites particularly the parents of the audience.
Remember that only two of their fathers made it
to the point of crossing the jordan; Joshua and
Caleb. The rest perished in the wilderness
primarily because they were quick to forget the
greatness and goodness of God and the miracles
He performed to free them from Egypt.
Why the Caution and Charge?2
• Secondly, he also knew how easy it is for
someone who has never tasted wealth to easily
forget the pain of several years in one day. Cf.
Gen. 41:51 hence these ones that were children
when they left Egypt and some born in the
wilderness how they may be quickly swept off
their feet when they experience the wealth that
awaits them in Canaan, the promised land.
• Thirdly, he was afraid for them because of the
consequence of God taking His face away from a
people or person. The enemies will destroy such.
What is the relevance to us?
• Coming to Christ is not really of our making, it
is the grace of God. With strong hand God
brought us out of sin to be His children.
• But enjoying the peace and joy of His
salvation many forget God in their heart.
Though they come to church but they claim of
the glory of God’s goodness.
• They are quick to condemn others and
sometimes push them off Christ as if their own
success is their making.
What is the relevance to us?2
• 2. …” A lethargic spirit accompanies a full
stomach and a satisfied heart” When many
people are in need they are so faithful; they
watch their behaviours, keep to the tenets of
the faith but when they are prospered soonest
they begin to justify the way of the world.
They copy the world in thinking, speaking,
dressing and conduct. They forget God. They
give to God as if God instead of honouring Him
with their substance in reverence and
meekness of heart.
The Charge and Altar Call
• So many distractions and deception today. We
need to be resolute and pray that God should
help us to keep Him at heart at all times and in
every situation.
• But if you have never fallen in love with Christ
before, you are missing out of life and have no
hope hereafter, I invite you into His love. I
invite you to surrender to His Lordship and
experience true freedom from the pressure of
life.
