ELECTRONIC LEARNING METHODS

INTRODUCTION

• E-training means the delivery of learning or training program by electronic means.

• E-training involves the use of a computer or any other electronic device to provide
training or educational material.
• Corporations now report that E-training is the second most valuable method that they
use. This is no surprise, given that online training saves businesses at least 5 0% when
they replace traditional instructor-based training with e Learning.
• E-training cuts down employee learning time by up to 60%.
Overview
• Over 41.7% percent of global Fortune 500 companies now use some form of
online training methods to train employees
• The world's most rapidly growing E-training markets are Malaysia and
Vietnam . In fact , the estimated 5 year annual growth rate for the Asian E-
training market is 17.3%. That is the highest compound annual growth rate of
any global region.
COMPONENTS OF AN ELECTRONIC TRAINING SYSTEM

1. PROGRAMMED INSTRUCTIONS (PI) :-

 PI method is a self paced learning managed by both the trainee and the
learning system.
 How to use PI effectively .
2. INTERACTIVE MEDIA (IM) :-
 Training using IM integrates the use of texts, graphics , video, photos,
animation, and sound to produce a complex training environment with
which the trainee interacts.
 How to use IM effectively .
COMPONENTS OF AN ELECTRONIC TRAINING SYSTEM

3. INTELLIGENT TUTORING SYSTEMS (ITS):-

 An ITS is a more sophisticated form of PI as it uses artificial intelligence to assist in
tutoring or coaching the trainee and it has five components including an expert
knowledge base, a trainee model, a training session manager , a scenario generator
and a user interface.
 How to use PI effectively .

4. VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) :-

 A VR puts the trainee in an artificial 3-D environment that simulates events and
situation's that might be experience on the job.

Knowledge Components of Creating and Delivering

Base ET

(provided by
content experts)
Once developed, e-learning may or may not be integrated in to learning management
system (LMS), depending on the sophistication of the company’s IT system.
An LMS can be more or less sophisticated and may or may not included features such as
• Authoring,
• Class management,
• Competency management,
• Knowledge management
• certification or compliance management,
• Mentoring,
• chat, threaded discussion, and
• Video conferencing.
A set of standards called the sharable content object referenced model
(SCORM) has been created to encourage the standardization of LMSs.
The final step is delivering the ET to the trainees. The most common delivery
methods are:
• Local computers and local area network (LANs),
• CD-ROM and DVDs,
• Internet and intranet, and
• iPod and MP3 players.
• More recently, social networking sites are being utilized to deliver training.
ET DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT

• Use learning design principles

• Provide individual attention
• Match delivery method to purpose of training
• Keep focus on the leaning, not the process
• Converting traditional programs to ET
Costs: Arguments are made both supporting and criticizing the cost effectiveness of ET. The costs
of developing and implementing a ET program are related to the following factors:
• Number of trainees taking the course per year
• Cost of wages per hour for trainees while they are taking the course
• Cost of wages per hour for course developer
• Amortized cost of hardware to support the ET
• Amortized cost of software the ET program
• Hours needed to develop ET course content
• Stability of the course content
• Cost of not addressing the training need sooner with some other method
STRENGTHS & LIMITATIONS OF ET
• COSTS :
No. of trainees taking the course per year
Cost of wages per hour for trainees while they are taking the course
Cost of wages per hour for course developer
Hours needed to complete ET program
Hours needed to develop ET course content
COSTS

• Little overhead cost • Infrastructure cost of dedicated

• No trainee travel cost servers
• Multimedia training less costly • Cost of periodic upgrades
• Cost of developing program
CONTROL OF MATERIAL & PROCESS

• Consistency of topic coverage • Increased time of learning

• Topic mastery across all • Lacks control over who is
trainees actually taking the training
• Portable
• Convenient
• Pace of learning can be
controlled
LEARNING OBJECTIVES (KSA)

• Repeated presentation of facts in • Difficulty in interaction and feedback

different formats • Behavioral aspects like attitude &
• Documentation and provision of motivation difficult to be influenced
