Recycling of Construction &

Demolition Waste into a

lightweight industrial material
David, Kleine Kristenne P.
20322663/ CE – 402
Occurrences
 In the Philippines
 Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is one of the
heaviest and most voluminous waste streams generated in
the EU.

David, Kleine Kristenne P.

Root Cause
Design and contract documents-related factors

Procurement-related factors

Handling, storage and worker-related factors

Site management and supervision-related factors

External Factors

David, Kleine Kristenne P.

Impact
 It may cause erosion

 Contaminate water table and surface water

 Attract pests

Create fire hazards

Scarcity of landfill space

Method
 Experimental Method

 Mix Ratios

Compressive strength test

Concrete mix design

Weaknesses
 High water absorption of C&D materials due
to cement mortar and the presence of
constituents such as bricks, roof tiles etc.
Improvement
 Increase the amount of water in the mix design
in order to cope up with the weakness
 The brick bats should be noticed in the
demolition waste and take measures on
preventing it.
Bonding nature and mortar properties to be
observed
Sugarcane Bagasse: A Concrete
Retarder

David, Kleine Kristenne P.

20322663/ CE – 402
Occurrences

Following the rice straw, one of the most generated waste

biomass is the sugarcane bagasse.

David, Kleine Kristenne P.

Impact
 Due to large production of sugar, waste is
generated.

Scarcity of landfill
Method
Method
Weaknesses
 As the amount of bagasse increases, the
compressive strength decreases.
 Number of curing days wasn’t specified.
Improvement
Find ways on how to apply a direct proportionality
in the amount of bagasse as to the strength of the
material.
The potential use of Bamboo
Fiber in reinforced concrete

David, kleine kristenne p.

20322663/ CE – 402
Occurrences
 Bamboo is regular, shabby, generally accessible and above all
solid in both pressure and pressure.
Root Cause
 The low tensile strength of the concrete material is the basic
concept of reinforced concrete.
Method
 Experimental Method

Flexural strength test

Compressive strength test

 Slump test
Weaknesses

 The flexural strength decreases as the

percentage of fiber increases.
Improvement
 More tensile tests is suggested to investigate the
relationship between the tensile strength of bamboo
and its performance as reinforcement in concrete.

The effect of thickness on the strength of bamboo

tensile samples is suggested to be investigated by
conducting tensile tests on samples with the same
dimensions as those used in concrete.
Quarry dust: An alternative for
fine aggregates
David, kleine kristenne p.
20322663/ CE – 402
Occurrences
 Philippines
 Malaysia
Root Cause
In the result of rocks crushing waste in
the form of dust is produced which is
known quarry dust. (Ahmad, et al., 2018)
Impact

 The quarry dust is the waste or by product of

crushed rocks which create air pollution
(Ahmad, et al., 2018)
Method
 Experimental Method

Compressive strength test

Weaknesses
 As the quantity of water increases,
the compressive strength decreases.
The workability of concrete decreases as the
replacement increases.
Improvement

Combination of quarry dust and rice husk will

be implemented which in turn will also help to
utilize rice waste

Proper mix ratios
