LAPSI

• Choerospondias axillaris

• Nepali hog plum

• Native to much of Asia

• Cultivated in rural Nepal

• Medicinal purpose (Vietnam)

• Made into pickles, fruit tarts, and sour,

spicy candy

LAPSI PITTING

• Removing seeds from fruit

• Has not been commercialized yet

• Thick sticky flesh

• Hard to cleanly separate flesh and seed

• Needs special purpose machine

• Lacks enough research and interest

NEED FOR RESEARCH

• Preliminary Survey in Sanga

• Seed was separated manually

• Market for a reliable lapsi pitter

• Can help to accelerate manufacturing

• Can be commercialized given a robust

and reliable build.

REAL LIFE PROBLEM

• Viscous slurry sticks to different parts

• Few similar projects undertaken

• Either crushed seeds

• Or poor flesh separation

• Acceptable flesh separation from

intact seeds

RESEARCH OBJECTIVE

• Main Objective:
To design and fabricate Lapsi pitting
machine for improved productivity in
Titaura cottage industries of Nepal.

• Specific Objective:
i. To modify/design existing fruit
pitting mechanisms to suit for Lapsi.
ii. To run experiments/simulations of
the mechanisms.
iii. To fabricate the machine and
compare productivity.
