RADIOACTIVITY

RADIO ACTIVITY - are those that can release energy. the 3

common types of radio active are alpha decay, beta decay,
and gamma decay powered by nuclear fusion . in which is
two light nuclei collide form a bigger nucleus with release
energy.
Radiation is classified as being either:
• Non-ionizing
>>Is to detach an electron from atoms
or molecules. Non-ionizing radiation is made up
energetic sub atomic particles.

• Ionizing
>>Is radiation with enough energy so
during interaction with an atom, it can remove
tightly bound electrons from the orbit of an atom,
causing the atom to become charged or ionized.
4 Types of Radioactivity
1. Alpha particles
>>Alpha particles are composite particles consisting of
two protons and two neutrons tightly bound together. They are
emitted from the nucleus of some radionuclides during a form of
radioactive decay, called alpha-decay.
2. Beta particles
>> Also called beta radiations a high speed electron, A
beta are types of ionizing radiation for protect purposes and
regard being less and they are smaller than the alpha particle.

3. X-rays and gamma rays

>> This is both have high penetrating
power and easily pass, and gamma rays is
created in power plants for nuclear energy and
used for smaller amount.
Geiger Counter
>>Geiger counters
are used to detect radioactive
emissions, most commonly
beta particles and gamma
rays. The counter consists of a
tube filled with an inert gas
that becomes conductive of
electricity when it is impacted
by a high-energy particle.
Scintillation counter
>> is an instrument for detecting and measuring ionizing
radiation by using the excitation effect of incident
radiation on a scintillating material, and detecting the
resultant light pulses.
