ANTIOXIDANTS

IN COSMETICS
IMPORTANCE OF
ANTIXOIDANTS
Cosmetic preparations containing fats
and oils, particularly those
characterized by a high percentage of
unsaturated linkages, are susceptible
to oxidative degradation.
These materials may develop
rancidity.
The addition of antioxidants prevents
rancidity by retarding oxidation and
 minimize changes in colour and
texture of the product.
Common antioxidants which are
generally used are,
Butylated hydroxylanisole (BHA),
nordihydroguaiaretic acid
and
phosphoric acid.
Commercially available combined
oxidant is branded as Tenox-II, which is
consisting
20% Butylated hydroxyl anisole,
6% propyl gallate,
4%citric acid and
70% propylene glycol.
