Rheology
Solids
Elastic like
Visco-elastic solids
Deformed but does not regain its original shape
Visco-elastic liquids
Deformed but does not regain its original shape but flows out
when squeezed
Viscous liquids
Flows freely

What is viscosity?
2
What is viscosity?
VISCOSITY
Viscosity is “the measure of a fluid’s internal flow resistance”
UNITS
Shear stress, ν = Force/Area = N/m2 = Pascal
Shear rate, τ = Velocity/Distance =m/s/m = s-1
3
Types of viscosity?
VISCOSITY
Static viscosity Dynamic viscosity
[Kinematic viscosity] [Shear, Absolute, Apparent viscosity]
Under the influence of earth’s gravity NOT under the influence of gravity
Units
4
Viscosity- Let’s recall
Which are ideally viscous or shear dependent material ???
5
Viscosity Measurement
Kinematic Viscosity
Gravity & Density: Distance vs Time
6
Viscosity Measurement
II. Standard test methods (Dynamic)
• Rotation
7
Non Newtonian
TIME INDEPENDANT
1. Shear thickening or Dilatant :
Eg. cream becomes butter, clay slurries
Increase in viscosity with increase in shear rate
8
Non Newtonian
TIME DEPENDANT
Thixotropic: Eg. Tomato ketchup, mayonnaise (gel-sol)
Decrease in viscosity with increase in shear rate and then up on stopping shear, they
regain its structure but time dependent
9
