What will I get in

At the end of the lesson, learning
you will be able to: about integers?

• Add, subtract, multiply and divide

integers;

• Solve word problems involving addition,

subtraction, multiplication and division of
integers; and

• Manifest confidence in
solving.
What is integer?

--an
integer is any whole
number, either a positive
or negative whole
number.
Examples:
2, 3, 4, 5, -25, 36, -36, -
50
FIRST, WE START
WITH POSITIVE AND
NEGATIVE
NUMBERS.
Positive number – a number greater than zero.
0 1 2 3 4 5

Negative number – a number less than zero.

-6 -5 -4 -3 -2 -1 0 123456
WE ALSO HAVE
OPPOSITE
NUMBERS.
Opposite Numbers – numbers that are
the same distance from zero in the
opposite direction.

-6-5-4-3-2-10 1 2 3 4 5 6

USING NUMBER
LINE

---Two integers are opposites if they

are each the same distance away from
zero, but on opposite sides of the
number line.
-----One will have a positive sign, the other a
negative sign.
THE SAME
SIGNED INTEGERS
--When integers have
the same sign, simply
add the integers. --The sum will have
the same sign as
the integers.

10 + 22 = 32 5 + 7 = 12

Examples

-6 + -9 = -
-13 + - 2 = -15 15
DIFFERENT
SIGNED INTEGERS
When integers have The sum will have
different sign, find the the sign of the
difference between two integer with a larger
numbers absolute value.

-10 + 22 = 12 5 + -7 = -2

13 + - 2 = 13 6 + -9 = -3
RULES IN ADDING
INTEGERS
RULE #1

The sum of two

positive integers is
always positive.
RULE
#2

The sum of two

negative integers is
always negative.
RULE
The sum of a positive and a #3
negative integer could be
positive, negative, or zero.

When you add a positive and

negative integer, you are really
subtracting. Then, you give
the answer the sign of the
greater absolute value.
DID YOU
KNOW?

Adding a negative
number is the same as
subtracting a positive
number.
ALSO….

Subtracting a negative
number is the same as
adding a positive
number.
NEED A
PROOF?

LOOK CLOSELY!
RULES FOR
SUBTRACTING INTEGERS (-
)
To subtract an integer, add its
opposite.

You will need to correctly change

all subtraction problems into
addition problems!
THERE ARE THREE
STEPS:

Keep the first integer the same. (Same)

Change the subtraction sign into an

addition sign. (Change)

Take the opposite of the number that

immediately follows the newly placed
addition sign. (Change)
RULES FOR
MULTIPLYING
RULE
#1 INTEGERS (X)
The product of two integers
with the signs is
.
RULE
#2

The product of two

integers with
signs is
.
DID YOU KNOW
THAT THE RULES
FOR
MULTIPLICATION
AND DIVISION
ARE THE SAME?
Guess
what….
RULES FOR
DIVIDING
RULE #1
INTEGERS (÷)

The product of two

integers with the
signs is .
RULE
#2

The product of two

integers with
signs is
.
The rules for division are
IN
exactly the same as those for SHORT………
multiplication.

If we were to take the rules

for multiplication and change
the multiplication signs to
division signs, we would
have an accurate set of rules
for division.

ADVENTURE
ACTIVITY 1

WHO WAS THE

FIRST ENGLISH
MATHEMATICIAN
WHO FIRST USED
THE MODERN
SYMBOL FOR
EQUALITY IN 1557?
To get the answer, compute the sums of the given
exercises below. Write the letter of the problem
corresponding to the answer found in each box at
the bottom.

A 25 + 95 C. (30) + (-20) R 65 + 75
B 38 + (-15) D. (110) + (-75) O (-120) + (-35)
O 45 + (-20) T. (16) + (-38) R (165) + (-85)
R (-65) + (-20) R (-65) + (-40) E 47 + 98
E (78) + (-15) E (-75) + (20)
ACTIVITY 2

WORLD?
Decode the answer by finding the difference of the
following subtraction problems. Write the letter to the
answer corresponding to the item in the box provided
below:
ACTIVITY 3

HOW CAN A
PERSON FAIRLY
DIVIDE 10 APPLES
AMONG 8
CHILDREN SO
THAT EACH CHILD
HAS THE SAME
SHARE.
To solve the dilemma, match the letter in column
II with the number that corresponds to the
numbers in column I.

Column I Column II
1. (6)(-12) C 270
2. (-13)(-13) P -72
3. (19)(-17) E 300
4. (-15)(29) K -323
5. (165)(0) A -435
6. (-18)(-15) M 0
7. (-15)(-20) L 16
8. (-5)(-5)(-5) J -125
9. (-2)(-2)(-2)(-2) U 169
10. (4)(6)(8) I 192
Now, write the corresponding letter in column II
in each blank.
ACTIVITY 4

WHAT WAS
THE ORIGINAL

of the following and write the letter of the
problems in the blank corresponding to the
quotient.
Let’s Practice “Addition”

1) 5+6=
2) -3 + (-2) =
3) -6 + 5 =
4) 8 + (-7) =
5) -9 + 9 =
Let’s Practice “Subtraction”

1) 5 – 2 =
2) -3 – 4 =
3) -1 – (-2) =
4) -5 – (-3) =
5) 7 – (-6) =
Let’s Practice “Multiplication”

1) 6 x (-3) =
2) 3 x 3 =
3) -4 x 5 =
4) -6 x (-2) =
5) -7 x (-8) =
Let’s Practice “Division”

1) -18 ÷ (-2) =
2) 48 ÷ (-6) =
3) -27 ÷ (-9) =
4) 64 ÷ (-8) =
5) -30 ÷ (-5) =
