Abstract:
 The word “Auto pilot” mode here refers to the process of implementing the
advanced technology in vehicles which enables it to self-drive in high way roads
without the control of the humans.
 This process is going to be achieved by the use of Radars, Sensors and
Advanced GPS maps. First a compact path of the place where user wants to go
is selected on the GPS map.
 When the engine is started, all equipment’s will start to take positioning. The
readings are obtained from the radar every second.
Introduction
 Driver error is the most common cause of traffic accidents
 India contributes 6% of the world`s road accident deaths
 Cell phones in car , entertainment systems , more traffic and more complicated
road systems making it more frequent
 By this improving technology our car will do the concentrating for us
 Separate signals are obtained from the ground level to detect the speed breakers
and conditions of the road.
 Same set of equipment’s is fixed on the rear side of the vehicle to avoid other
vehicles hit on rear side of the user’s vehicle.
What is a driverless car?
 It is a vehicle that can drive itself from one point to another without assistance
from a driver; in other words with an autopilot system
How will the car detect the traffic lights ?
 A sensor “actinometer” is used to detect the intensity of radiation
 Light of different colors will radiate different to intensity of radiation
 Which will be detected by the sensor
 If the detected intensity is of red color or yellow color then controller will send a
command to stop the vehicle
 The command will be followed by robot(to convert the computer command into
mechanical input)
Technologies making a system fully
autonomous
 Anti-lock brakes(ABS)
 Electronic stability control
(ESC)
 Cruise control
 Lane departure warning
system
 Self parking
 Automated guided vehicle
systems
Anti lock brakes system (ABS)
 An ABS generally offers improved vehicle control and decreases stopping distances
on dry and slippery surfaces for many drivers.

parts of ABS;
 Speed sensors
 Valves
 Pump
 controller
Electronic stability control (ESC)
 A computerized technology
improves vehicle’s stability
by detecting and
minimizing skids
 Automatically applies the brakes
 ESC compares the driver’s
intended direction to the
vehicles actual direction
Cruise control

 Cruise control keeps the car at a constant speed by taking over the throttle of the car.
 It also maintain a set distance between it and the car in front of it.
Lane departure warning system
 A mechanism designed to warn a driver when the vehicle begins to move out of its
lane.

 Designed to minimize
accidents by addressing
the main causes of collisions : driving error ,
distraction and drowsiness
Self parking cars
 System uses sensors all around the car to guide it into a parallel parking space
 Lexus LS 460 L with Advanced Parking Guidance System
 The driver has to find a parking space
 Position the car next to it , and use the in-cabin navigation screen to tell the car
where it should go
 The parking space needs to be 6 feet (1.8 meters) longer than the car
Backup camera & parking sensors

 Special type of video camera attached to the rear of a vehicle to aid in backing up
 Parking sensors are proximity detectors which can alert the driver to unseen
obstacles during parking
Automated guided vehicles systems
 Uses FROG (Free Ranging On
Grid) technology
 FROG vehicles are
equipped with a computer
that contains a map
of the area
How the Autopilot system works
1. At first the compact map path to the user’s destination is selected on the GPS unit.
2. The radar starts ton feed the control unit with the data of every objects at the limit
of 180 degree angle.
3. The car starts the journey in safe route combining the continuous data from radars
,sensors , GPS data.
4. Separate sensors (in bottom of the car) signal to decelerate the car for speed
breakers , damaged roads.
5. This rear sensors ensures that no other vehicles hit the users car during
deceleration , curves and overtaking.
Overtaking in Autopilot mode

Step 1: The sensors Step 2: The car moves Step 3:When the back Step 4: The

two cars.
Cruise Automation
Features:
 cameras and radars to map out surroundings(including other vehicles)
 Used mainly for highway scenarios.
 Advancing with maintaining the same speed without any manual control.
 Collision avoidance.
 RP-1 sensors.
 Will be made in future for other vehicles.
The LIDAR system
Features:
• vertical and horizontal setup of the system possible.
• Image acquisition with fully integrated NIKON DSLR camera.
• 3D mode of the VZ scanner with continuous rotation of the scanning head for highly efficient
mobile data acquisition.
• 360 degree static scanning.
PROS. And CONS of both system

LIDAR system: CRUISE system:

1.Design is very bulky and heavy 1.Design is small and lightweight
2.Fully autonomous 2.not fully autonomous
3.Can be used in basically anywhere 3.mainly for highway scenarios
Advantages:
 Managing traffic flow to increase road capacity.
 Relieving vehicle occupants from driving allowing them to concentrate on other
tasks or to rest during their journeys.
 To avoid accidents.
 The current location of vehicle can be determine using global positioning
system(GPS).
Disadvantages:
 If the vehicle is using internet which is have less security then from the hackers
point of view in some cases the vehicle can be switched off on the road(in rare
cases)
 Hackers can change the rout which is plotted in the system (in rare cases)
conclusion
 By implementing this Autopilot mode technology will surely reduce the occurrences
of road accidents by a considerable value. In the future, the wide acceptance of my
technology will create an “Accident free world”.
 The driver less cars technologies improves vehicles stability helps to minimize loss
of control.
