“In the psychology of the definition of depression are symptoms
and feelings of sadness that are psychopathological which are
accompanied by loss of interest, lack of energy, and increased
fatigue.” ── Kusmanto (1981)

“The definition of depression is a period of occurrence of human


functioning disorders associated with natural feelings of sadness
and accompanying symptoms, including changes in sleep
patterns and appetite, psychomotor, concentration, anhedonia,
fatigue, despair and helplessness and suicide.” ── Kaplan
“According to basic health research
(2013)’s data, showing the
prevalence of mental disorders such
as depression and difficulties for
ages 15 years and over reaching 14
million people or 6% of the total
population of Indonesia.”
Symptoms of
Depression
 Always feel anxious and worry too much.
 Easy to be angry or sensitive, and easy to cry.
 Difficulty concentrating, thinking, and making decisions
 Feel worthless and helpless; feel like a loser.
Lost motivation and interest
Feeling upset, easily ignited by emotions, and intolerant of others.
 Cannot feel the slightest happiness or pleasure from positive
situations and events.
 Thinking of suicide or self-harm.
Sleep disorders.
 Changes in body weight.
 Menstruation becomes irregular.
 Unexplained body aches and pains.
 Not energized or always tired.
 Constipation.

Can not work or move as usual; focus easily broken or distracted.


 Avoid socializing with friends and family.
 Difficult to interact in your home and work environment; vulnerable to facing
problems with people around.
 Ignore or hate hobbies and activities that you previously enjoyed.
Types of Depression
1. Major Depressive Disorder
“a Mental health disorder characterized by persistently
depressed mood or loss of interest in activities, causing
significant impairment in daily life.”
• Changes in neural circuit may be a cause

These may include changes in sleep,


appetite, energy level, concentration,
daily behaviour or self-esteem.
Depression can also be associated with
thoughts of suicide.

Atypical Depression
2. Persistent Depressive Disorder
“a Serious and disabling disorder that shares many
symptoms with other forms of clinical depression. It is
generally experienced as a less severe but more chronic
form of major depression.”

People may experience hopelessness,


excessive hunger, insomnia,
indecisiveness, irritability or low self-
esteem.
3. Manic Depression or Bipolar Disorder
“a Mental health condition that causes extreme
mood swings that include emotional highs (Mania or
Hypomania) and low (Depression).”

Treatment can help, but this condition can’t be cured.


How to Deal with Depression

1. Do Hobbies or go outside

2. Relax for a moment and take a deep


breath

3. Talk to people you trust

4. Try new things

5. Go on vacation

6. Go to a doctor and do therapy

1. Understanding Depression in a friend or


family member.

2. Recognizing depression symptoms

3. Encouraging the person to get help

4. Support their treatment
