1.3 Network Types
1.4 Internet History
1.5 Standards and Administration

Chapter 1: Objective
The first section introduces data communications and defines
their components and the types of data exchanged. It also
shows how different types of data are represented and how
data is flowed through the network.
• Message
• Text, numbers, pictures , audio & video
• Sender
• Computer, telephone handset, video camera etc
• Receiver
• Computer, telephone handset, television etc
• Transmission Medium
• Twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, fiber-optic cable, radio waves
• Protocol
Animesh Giri , Asst.Prof. Dept of ISE, PESIT South Campus 9
1.1.2 Data Representation
Audio
Video
Simplex (one way communication)
Halfduplex (two way, but not at the same time)
Fullduplex (two way communication)
Performance
Reliability
Security
Accuracy of delivery
Frequency of failure
Time taken by a link to recover from a failure
Network’s robustness in a catastrophe
Adv: Eliminate Traffic Problem , Robust, Security, fault identification and fault
isolation
Dis-adv: more I/O ports, bulk of wiring, difficult installation & reconnection,
expensive
• For n nodes, n(n-1) duplex-mode links needed for
MESH topology & every node needs (n-1) I/O ports
1.22
• Ex for mesh topology: Connection of telephone
Figure 1.5: A star topology
After defining networks in the previous section and discussing their physical
structures, we need to discuss different types of networks we encounter in the world
today.
The criteria of distinguishing one type of network from another is difficult and
sometimes confusing. We use a few criteria such as size, geographical coverage, and
ownership to make this distinction.

Now that we have given an overview of the Internet and its protocol,
let us give a brief history of the Internet. This brief history makes it
clear how the Internet has evolved from a private network to a global
one in less than forty years.
