 First spoken in early medieval England and is now a global lingua franca.

by Latin and French.[6]

 English is the third most spoken native language in the world. It is the most
widely the official language or one of the official languages in almost 60
sovereign states.

also the first world language. English is the world's most widely used
language in newspaper publishing, book publishing, international
telecommunications, scientific publishing, international trade, mass
entertainment, and diplomacy.

 Despite noticeable variation among the accents and dialects of

English used in different countries and regions—in terms
of phonetics and phonology, and sometimes
also vocabulary, grammar and spelling—English-speakers from around
the world are able to communicate with one another with relative ease.

 Most people learn English for practical rather than ideological reasons.

independently to institutions, for two years following the test.

 The test was originally developed at the Center for Applied Linguistics under the direction
of Stanford University.

 The TOEFL test was first administered in 1964 by the Modern Language Association.
