BASICS OF

SCHEDULING
INTRODUCTION
 What is Scheduling?

 What are the important tasks of

scheduling?

 What are the principles of

scheduling?
OBJECTIVES
 Making efficient use of the labour
 Increasing the profit & the output
 Improving the service level
 Maximizing the delivery performance
 Reducing the manufacturing time
 Minimizing the production costs & the
worker costs

SCHEDULING SERVICE
OPERATIONS
 What Is Service Scheduling?

 Strategies For Service Scheduling :

• Peak demand strategy
• Hire & fire strategy
• Variable price strategy
• Self-service strategy
• Flexible capacity strategy
MASTER PRODUCTION
SCHEDULE
 What is Master Production Schedule?
 Objectives of Master Production
Schedule:
• Deliver end product as per requirement of customers on
proper time.
• Proper balancing between maximum utilization of production
capacity & idle time of machinery, jobs & workers.
Advantages of MPS
 Develops aggregate planning
 Processes material requirement
 Develops capacity plans
 Utilizes capacity efficiently
 Fixes up priorities

JOB SEQUENCING
 The process of determining the job order on some machine
or in some work centre is known as sequencing or priority
sequencing.

 Priority rules are the rules used in obtaining job sequencing.

PRIORITY RULES FOR JOB SEQUENCING:

 FCFS (First-come, first-served)
 SOT (Shortest operating time)
 EDD (Earliest due date first)
 STR (Slack time remaining)
 LCFS (Last-come, first-served)

SOLUTION: 1. FCFS RULE

FCFS CONTD:
Total flow time= 3+7+9+15+16=50 Days
Mean flow time=50/5=10 Days
Job will late by (0+1+2+6+14) Days
2.SOT RULE:

Total flow time=1+3+6+10+16=36 Days

Mean flow time=36/5=7.2 Days
Job will be late by (0+0+1+4+7) Days
3.EDD RULE

Total flow time:1+4+8+10+16=39 Days

Mean flow time:39/5= 7.8 Days
Job will be late by (0+0+2+3+7) Days

JOB OPERATION TIME ON OPERATION TIME ON
MACHINE 1 MACHINE 2
A 3 2
B 6 8
C 5 6
D 7 4

Solution:-
Step 1:List operation time
Step 2&3:Select the shortest operation time and assign
Step 4:Repeat steps 2&3 until completion of the
schedule.
Solution sequence is C B D A and the flow time is 25
Days.
