Definition Acute Appendictis

 Acute appendicitis is the most common abdominal surgical emergency in

the world, with around 50 000 and 300 000 acute appendicectomies
performed annually in the UK and in the US respectively. However, its
incidence is falling for unknown reasons.
 Acute appendicitis can affect people of any age but is most common
between the ages of 10 and 20 years. It is more common in males,
although females are twice as likely to undergo an appendicectomy.
How to prevent the disease
a. A High-Fiber Diet May Help You Avoid This Condition
Including a bounty of fresh, fiber-rich vegetables and fruits into your meals is a wonderful
prevention strategy against appendicitis.
b. Some of the best high-fiber foods you can eat include:
 Vegetables such as broccoli and Brussels sprouts
 Root vegetables and tubers, including sweet potatoes, onions and jicama
 Organic psyllium seed husk, flax hemp and chia seeds
 Berries (in moderate amounts)
 Peas
 Raw almonds
 Green beans
 Cauliflower
 Beans
Tell about the disease

 Aetiology remains uncertain, but possible causes include luminal obstruction

blocking the escape of mucosal secretions and leading to an increase in
pressure, causing engorgement and stasis that can lead to necrosis and
eventually perforation.Faecoliths, foreign bodies, malignancy, and
lymphoid hyperplasia during an infection are described as possible causes
of luminal obstruction. There is no known genetic cause of acute
appendicitis, but increased risk has been observed in twin studies and in
those with a positive family history
Symptoms

 Dull pain near the navel or the upper abdomen that becomes sharp as it
moves to the lower right abdomen. This is usually the first sign.
 Loss of appetite
 Nausea and/or vomiting soon after abdominal pain begins
 Abdominal swelling
 Nability to pass gas
Medication
 Since appendicitis can be caused by an infection, then it makes sense to
maintain good immune system health to prevent falling victim to it. You
can do this by consuming a well-balanced diet with probiotics and
following healthy lifestyle strategies like managing your stress levels and
getting enough exercise. Taking supplements that can keep your body
resistant against infections may also be helpful. These include beta-
carotene, vitamin C and zinc
 Medication Summary
The goals of therapy are to eradicate the infection and to prevent
complications. Thus, antibiotics have an important role in the treatment of
appendicitis. Antibiotic agents are effective in decreasing the rate of
postoperative wound infection and in improving outcome in patients with
appendiceal abscess or septicemia.
Treatment

 Surgery
 Open appendectomy
