Relative Density
Relative Density
• It is the ratio of the density of a substance
to the density of standard substance.
Specific Gravity
• It is the ratio of the density of substance to
the density of H2O.

If water is considered as a standard substance:

SG = RD
Mass Density

DEFINITION OF MASS DENSITY

The mass density of a substance is the

mass of a substance divided by its volume:

m

V
SI Unit of Mass Density: kg/m3
Density
• SI unit: Kg/m3
– ρH2O= 1000 Kg/m3
– ρH2O= 1 g/cm3

Note:
RD of a substance is numerically equal to it’s
density when express in g/cm3
Ex.) RD = 2.75
ρ = 2.75 g/cm3
Archimedes’ Principle

ARCHIMEDES’ PRINCIPLE

When an object is partially or fully immersed in a fluid, the

fluid will exert an upward force that is equal to the weight of
displaced fluid. The force exerted by the fluid is known as
bouyant force.
