PRATIK SRIVASTAVA

Midsemester report

We saw the following points:

 The components to be adsorbed

 Kinetic model
 Adsorption model
 Factors affecting adsorption
We saw the adsorption of the
following
 Oil by ZnO nanoparticles and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) coated
on quartz sand filter
 Pb ions by Zn-BDC coated on Magnetic Montmorillonite
 MO and MB by MOF-235
 Naproxen by MIL-101
 Diclofenac by UiO-66-NH2
 Fluorude by UiO-66 and ZIF-8
Adsorption studied for the end
semester
 Methylchlorophenoxypropionic acid (MCPP) by UiO-66
 Arsenic by UiO-66
 Sulfachloropyradazine (SCP) by UiO-66
 Cationic dyes by UiO-66-NH2
 Diclofenac by UiO-66-SO3H
 Hg+2 and CH3Hg+ by DUT-67-Zr
 Copper ions by MOF-5
 Sulfachloropyradazine (SCP) by HKUST-1
 Dimetridazole (DMZ) and Metronidazole (MNZ) by MIL-101
 Ibuprofen and Diclofenac by Carbon derived from MAF-6
What is the aim of the project?

 To learn about metal-organic frameworks

 Adsorption mechanisms
 Models used
 Whether they be used for commercial wastewater
filtration.
How can we know that?

 If we have a MOF with a good adsorptive capacity, works in an

optimal environment and has good recyclability
We can say that we have found an alternative to the present day
adsorbents
 Most of the MOFs have all 3, but some of them excel at adsorbing
only in harsh conditions, such as a low pH.

 Arsenic adsorption by UiO-66

Adsorbs the best at pH 2.
Models used
 Kinetic models

If the adsorption model follows the pseudo 1st order, physisorption takes
place and increasing temperature leads to a decrease in the adsorption
If the adsorption model follows the pseudo 2nd order, chemisorption takes
place and increasing temperature leads to an increase in the adsorption.
 There was one exception, in the adsorption of copper ions by MOF-5
fractal like pseudo 1sr order was followed as different active sites for
adsorption were present, making the rate constant time dependent.
 Adsorption models

Langmuir model monolayer adsorption, identical sites

Freundlich model second multilayer adsorption

 Exception : Adsorption of copper ions by MOF -5

Since the surface of the adsorbent is heterogenous, Langmuir-
Freundlich isotherm was used.
Results?

 We saw that the MOFs deliver as we wanted.

They gave a high absorptivity and high recyclability
while having low cost and easier adsorption at optimum
temperature.

 Some MOFs exceeded our expectations and gave a

higher adsorption capacity than the reported ones.
Ex: Arsenic removal by UiO-66, uptake capacity of
303.34 mg/g at the optimal pH was reported.
Has the aim been achieved?
What have I learnt from this project?
