The self inflating tires are designed to inflate or deflate tires
automatically.
Tires need more air while driving on hard surfaces at high
speeds and less air for driving on soft surfaces such as soil or sand .Using this system the driver of the vehicle can select an appropriate tire pressure from inside the vehicle. Tire-inflation system’s job
Detect when the air pressure in a particular tire has
dropped. Notify the driver of the problem. Inflate that tire back to the proper level. COMMOM ELEMENTS USED WHEEL VALVE-They use valve to isolate individual tires to prevent airflow. ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT-They have a method for sensing the tire pressures. They have an air source. There's a way to get the air from the air source to the tires.. There's a pressure relief vent to vent air from the tire. Central Tire Inflation System’s (CTIS) Primary functions A wheel valve is present which isolate the tire from the system when it's not in use. An electronic control unit (ECU), the brain of the system is mounted behind the passenger seat. An operator control panel let customize tire pressure model. CTIS includes a speed sensor which provides information about current speed & in turn CTIS maintain the optimum tire pressure. CTIS gives priority to the brakes since the brakes & the tire share air from the same compressor. CTIS ; an inside look Tire Inflation System Basics
Tire inflation system have three basic goals-
Detect when the air pressure in a particular tire has dropped.
This means it continuously monitors the air pressure in each tire.
Notify the driver of the problem.
Inflate that tire back to the proper level.
Tire Maintenance System (TMS) TMS is a smart system for tractor trailers that monitors tire pressure and inflates tires as necessary to keep pressure at the right level.
Advantages: 1. It improves a tire’s lifespan. 2. Correct tire pressure leads to lower rolling resistance. 3. Fuel efficiency improves significantly.
Disadvantages: 1. Too many components. 2. More costly than the conventional tires. 3. Heavier than general vehicles. 4. Requires more maintenance. Applications
