CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

THE BASIC MATERIALS OF A CONSTRUCTION

ARE:
 CEMENT
 AGGREGATE
 WATER
 ADMIXTURE
 REINFORCEMENTS
PLANTS AND MACHINERY

Plants and machineries are the helpful equipment to maximize the

outcome with minimum work energy for building construction. Here in
our construction site they have used only two types of machines.
 Excavating & earth moving equipment: Excavator
 Concrete mixer equipment: Concrete mixer machine
BASIC STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS

 FOOTING

EXTERNAL WORK

EXCAVATION:
Excavation is the process of moving soil, rocks or other
materials with tools and equipment. Excavation is used in
construction to create building foundations. It is done by
excavator.
FOUNDATION
 Foundation is the lowest part of a building or other construction
partly or wholly below the surface of the ground.
 It is design to support and secure the superstructure and transmit
its weights directly to the earth.
 Type of footing in the construction site –Isolated rectangular
footing.
 Jaali Design- 12mmф Fe500 TMT Bar.
 Development length of few meters are provided.

COLUMNS

 Columns are vertical structure elements that transfer the loads

from the beams to the foundations.
 Column basically of two types:
Short column-(L/D)<12
Long column-(L/D)>=12
 Fe500 TMT Bars are used in the construction of the building.
 In the building construction the column size is 450mm x 650mm
COLUMNS

 Corner columns of the building are subjected to eccentric

loading and biaxial bending.
 Side-sways of the interior columns are restricted with the help of
walls.

BEAMS

 Beams are rigid structural members designed to carry and

transfers load across space to supporting element.
 Beams and slabs that is in our site is constructed together . It is
a continuous casting of concrete beam and slab.
 In the construction of building the beam size is 300mm x
700mm.
 Fe500 TMT Bars are used in the construction of the building.
 Types of Beams used –Continuous.

SLABS

 Slabs are used to support and transmit loads to the walls or

beams supporting and sometimes transmit the loads directly to
the columns by flexure, shear and torsion.
 Types of slabs :
One way slab
Two way slab
Flat slab
Flat Plates
 One way slab type is used in our construction.
 Slab thickness is 200mm.
LAYOUT OF SLABS
WALLS

 Walls are often used to support loads, to insulate the building

and to work as a climatic enclosure, protecting the building from
sun, wind and rain.
 Masonry wall: Masonry walls are made of piled up modular
blocks, usually made of clay, stone, cement or concrete.
 Clay Brick: Made from a mixture of clay and water then pressed
into forms and fired in a kiln.
 Mortar: Mortar is a workable paste consists of cement or lime, or
a combination of both with sand and water.
MASONRY WALL
DOORS

 Door is a hinged, sliding, or revolving barrier at the entrance to a

building or in the interior rooms.
 Common types of doors:
Ledged and battened door
Ledged and braced door
Panelled door
Glazed door
Panelled and glazed door
Flush door
Louvred door
Revolving door
Sliding door
Collapsible steel door
Rolling Steel door
WINDOWS

 Windows is an opening in the wall or roof of a building , fitted in

a frame to admit light or air and allow people to see out.
 Grills as barrier are usually provided.
 Types of windows:
Casement window
Fixed window
Pivoted window
Louvred window
Double hung window
Sliding window
