CARBON

FOOTPRINT
SUBJECT: ENVIROMENTAL LAW
DEFINITION IN GENERAL

• The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly

support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon

dioxide (CO2)
DEFINITION IN SPECIFIC

• A carbon footprint is a gauge of the measured output units of carbon

dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) for a particular individual, product,

practice or organization as it applies to environmental impact

CALCULATION OF CARBON
FOOTPRINT
FORMULA
• Carbon footprint (cf)= Number of people (P) x Total carbon emission per
year (EI) x Number of days people spent at place over a year(EIP)
On the general terms the government has decided the rate of certain category which would be helpful.

Total carbon emission per year: 6021 kg

Energy consumption of an individual : 228kWh

Co2 produced by individual per year : 98 kg

For example, calculate the carbon footprint generated at a classroom with 48 students, 1

lecturer for 6 months

SOURCES OF CARBON
FOOTPRINT
1. Human Sources

• Human activities such as the burning of oil, coal and gas, as well as
deforestation are the primary cause of the increased carbon dioxide
concentrations in the atmosphere.
2. Transportation sector

• The transportation sector is the second largest source of anthropogenic

carbon dioxide emissions

• Road transport accounts for 72% of this sector's carbon dioxide emissions

• Aviation is also the most carbon-intensive form of transportation, so it's

growth comes with a heavy impact on climate change.
THE EFFECTS OF CARBON
FOOTPRINT
1. Increasing Incidents of Severe Weather
• Carbon dioxide persists in the atmosphere for 50 to 200 years, so emissions
released now will continue to warm the climate in the future

• It will result in global warming and melting of the glaciers

2. Changes in Food Supply

• Changing weather affects the agricultural industry and the human food
supply. Carbon emissions contribute to increasing temperatures and
decreasing precipitation, changing the growing conditions for food crops in
many areas.
WAYS TO REDUCE CARBON
FOOTPRINT
Appliances
Make energy efficiency a primary consideration when choosing new appliances like furnaces, air conditioning
units, dishwashers, and refrigerators. ENERGY STAR labeled products are recognized as having superior energy
efficiency.
Lighting
Turn off lights you’re not using and when you leave the room. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact
flourescent or LED ones.

Support clean energy sources

Whenever you can, advocate for clean alternatives to fossil fuels, such as wind, solar, geothermal, and appropriately
designed hydroelectric and biomass energy projects
