Books

• Mechanics of Materials by Hibbeler

• Mechanics of Material by Beer, Johnston,
DeWolf, Mazurek
• Introduction to Mechanics of Materials by
Riley and Zachary
• Mechanics of Materials by Higdon, Olsen,
Stiles, Weese, and Riley
• Mechanics of Materials by Timoshenko and

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials
Misc Points

• It is one of the fundamental subject of

Aerospace Engineering
• Make a habit of spending 5~8 hours per
week of work on this subject
• By solving problems from the books on the
subject, you can become real “expert” of
the subject
• It is a difficult subject

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials

Conduct of Class

• Maintain discipline
• Punctuality
– Marked absent if late by 5 min
• Zero tolerance in case of cheating
• No retake of OHT
• 20% absence allowed for only emgy cases

INTRODUCTION

• Mechanics of materials is a study of the

relationship between the external loads on a
body and the intensity of the internal loads
within the body.

• This subject also involves the deformations

and stability of a body when subjected to
external forces.

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials

Loads Classification

• With respect to time

– A Static Load is a gradually applied load for which
equilibrium is reached in a short time.
– A Sustained Load is constant over a long period of
time. Example is the weight of the structure (Dead
Load). Generally treated the same way as Static
Load.
– An Impact Load is rapidly applied load (an energy
load). Result is vibration of the structure.
– A Repeated Load is a load that is applied and
removed, applied again and removed. This is done
thousands of time

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials

Load Classification

• With respect to the area over which it is

applied
– A Concentrated Load is applied at a point, or
very small area compared to the total area of
the structure
– A Distributed Load is distributed along the
length or over an area

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials

Load Classification

• With respect to method of application

– A Centric Load passes thru the centroid of the
cross section
– A Shearing Load tends to shear the plate, nuts,
bolts, etc
– A Torsional Load that causes twist to the
structure e.g. shaft
– A Bending or Flexural Load is applied
transverse to the longitudinal axis of the
structure
– A Combined Load is combination of two or
more of above type

Support Reactions

● Surface forces developed at the

supports/points of contact
between bodies.

Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials

Common Supports

● If the support prevents translation in a given direction, then a force must be

developed on the member in that direction. Likewise, if rotation is prevented, a
couple moment must be exerted on the member.
Dr Iqbal Rasool Mechanics of Materials
Equations of Equilibrium

● Equilibrium of a body requires a balance of forces

and a balance of moments

F  0 M O  0

● For a body with x, y, z coordinate system with origin

 F  0 ,  F  0 , F  0
x y z

M  0 ,M y  0 , M z  0
x

● Best way to account for these forces is to draw the

body’s free-body diagram (FBD).
