• Islam is an Abrahamic, Monotheistic, Universal Religion.
• It is the world’s second-largest religion (after
Christianity) with over 1.8 billion followers or 24% of the
world’s population.
• It is historically believed to have originated in the early
7th century CE in Mecca.
• It is the fastest-growing major religion in the world.
• Islam means surrender, submission, commitment and
peace. Thus, it can be defined as a path to attain complete
peace through voluntary submission to the divine will.

What is Islam?
• Muslims are people who follow or practice Islam.
• Muslim means one who submits.

• The largest denomination of Islam are Sunni Muslims


who constitute 85-90 percent of the total Muslim
population, followed by the Shia who makes up most of
the remainder of Muslims.

Who are the Muslims?


• Christians, Jews and Muslims all trace their lineage through
Abraham.
• Muslims are descendants of Ishmael, Abraham’s first son with
Hagar, the maid of his wife Sarah.
• Jews descend from Isaac, Abraham’s second son and 1st with
wife Sarah.
• Hagar and Ishmael are cast out (Genesis says he died at age
137).
• Muslims and Jews/Christians share many of the same stories
and beliefs (although they may be slightly different).

RELIGIONS
• Muhammad, sometimes spelled “Mohammed” or
“Mohammad,” was the founder of Islam.
• born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in 570 A.D.
• Muslims believe he was the final prophet sent by God to reveal
their faith to mankind.
• According to Islamic texts and tradition, an angel named
Gabriel visited Muhammad in 610 A.D. while he was
meditating in a cave. The angel ordered Muhammad to recite
the words of Allah.
• Muslims believe that Muhammad continued to receive
revelations from Allah throughout the rest of his life. Starting
in about 613, Muhammad began preaching throughout Mecca
the messages he received.

• SHAHADAH – confession of one’s
faith in God and his prophet

• SALAT – five prayers daily (dawn,
noon, mid-afternoon, sunset, and
evening).
• ZAKAH – almsgiving or charity; 2 ½
% of your wealth given to the needy.
• SAWM – fasting; no food, drink, or
intercourse from sunrise to sunset
during the month of Ramadan.
• HAJJ – pilgrimage; those who ar able
must make one trip in their life to
Mecca.
