Product Function identification
 Definition – it’s the primary and secondary function of any
product that’s in the market. The function of the product should
be short and narrowed down to its work.
 Examples :
Product name Primary function Secondary function
Mobile phone To communicate To entertain
Scale Draw straight-line To measure
Hard disk To store data To transfer data
subsystem function identification
 Definition – the function of any product’s parts(subsystem) has
been identified.
 Example: Camera
Parts Functions

Lens To adjust focus, aperture

Memory card To store photos and videos

Sensor Conversion of image into electric

signal
Flash Alter the brightness

Tripod stand To hold camera frame

Screen To look through screen to capture

Shutter Controls the amount of light

More example: hair dryer

Parts functions
Cover Protects all the internal parts
Nozzle Directs the air into particular direction
Motor To rotate the fan inside the dryer
Fan It blows air
Heating coil Produces hear when electricity
passed through
Switch ON/OFF the dryer
Electrical wire Transmits electrical power to whole
system
Plug Wires are connected to the plug to
switch board
Product dismantling

Analog watch

Strap Covering jewels

Main spring escapement

Product architecture
Parts/Assembly functions

Crown Change the data and time

Main spring Used as a power source

Balance spring Regulating the accuracy of time

Escapement Maintains the oscillation of wheel

Allows the hands to revolve
Gear train Transfer power from battery to
escapement
Jewels Acts as a bearing for gear train to
reduce friction
Metal closing plate Base plate that covers all the
parts and assembly
Presentation on innovative products
 Products that are very unusual, rare, creative and interesting in
the market and it serves the purposes.
 These are the few examples of those:
 More examples:
Product specification
 Written statement of an item's required characteristics
documented in a manner that facilitate its procurement or
production and acceptance.

Design calculation for vane pump
 Major axis = 63.7mm (r= 31.85)
 Minor axis = 53.4mm (r=26.7)
 Thickness t = 14mm
 Q/Rev = vol. of elliptical hole
Vol. of rotor = pi*r^2*h
=>pi(26)^2*14 = 29,732.032mm3
Vol. of elliptical hole = pi*a*b*h
=>pi(31.85)(26.7)(14) = 37,402.325mm3
Therefore, Q/Rev = 37,402.325-29,732.032 = 7.670cm3/min
To find the flow rate for 950rpm,
Q=displacement*RPM
7.670*950 = 7.268 lit/min
Redesign calculation
If Q = 10 L//min
Then, Q = displacement* RPM
Displacement = 10,000/950 = 10.52 cm2 /rev
Q/Rev = vol. of elliptical hole – vol. of rotor
10.52 = pi*a*b*h – pi*r^2*h
10.52 = pi*h [a*b-b^2]
10.52 = pi (14) ( 0.185*b^2) (since r=b)

b= 3.5cm=>35mm
a= 4.1cm=>41mm
r= < b= 34mm
