Angular Position
A compact disc
rotating about a fixed axis through
O perpendicular to the plane of the
figure. (a) In order to define
angular position for the disc,
a fixed reference line is chosen.
A particle at P is located at a
distance r from the rotation axis
at O. (b) As the disc rotates, point
P moves through an arc length s on
a circular path of radius r.
The arc length s is related to the angle Ѳ through the relationship :
• θ IS the Rasio ofan arc length and the radius of
the cirle , it is a pure number. However we
commonly give θ the artificial unit radian (rad)
Where,
one radian is the angle subtended by an arc length equal to the radius of the arc.
10.3 (b). The fact that & is negative indicates that we are
dealing with an object that is rotating in the clockwise
direction. We also know that when ω and α are antiparallel,
& must be decreasing—the object is slowing down.
Therefore, the object is spinning more and more slowly
(with less and less angular speed) in the clockwise, or
negative, direction.
Rotational Kinematics: Rotational Motion
with Constant Angular Acceleration
ANSWER
(b). In Equation 10.8, both the initial and final
angular speeds are the same in all three cases.
As a result, the angular acceleration is
inversely proportional to the angular
displacement. Thus, the highest angular
acceleration is associated with the lowest
angular displacement.
Angular and Linear Quantities
• The magnitude of the tangential velocity of the point
P is by definition the tangential speed v =
ds/dt,where s is the distance traveled by this point
measured along the circular path. Recalling that s=rѲ
ad noting that r is constant, we obtain
