Concurrent Equilibrium

3. A load of 100 lb is hung from the middle of


the rope which is stretched between two rigid
walls 30 ft apart. Due to the load the rope sags
4 feet in the middle. Determine the tension in

4. A 500-kg block is resting on a 30° inclined


plane with coefficient of static friction of 0.3.
Find the required force P acting horizontally

5. A pipeline crossing a river is suspended from a steel


cable stretched between the posts 100 m apart. The weight
of the pipe and the cable is 15 kg/m assumed to be

required between posts.

7. A simply supported beam is five meters in length.


It carries a uniformly distributed load including its
own weight of 300 N/m and concentrated load of
100 N, 2 meters form the left end. Find the reaction

Threaded Members
8. A double thread ACME screw driven by a motor at 400 rpm
raises the attached load of 900 kg at a speed of 10 meters per
minute. This screw has a pitch diameter of 36 mm. The coefficient
of friction on threads is 0.15. The friction torque on the thrust
bearing of the motor is taken as 20% of the total torque input.
Determine the motor power required to operate the screw.

Clutch
9. A local utility vehicle production company have considered to use
in one of its designs a multi-disc clutch consisting of 9 steel discs
and 8 bronze discs, with effective outside and inside diameter of
220 mm and 160 mm, respectively. If the shaft turns at 1500 rpm
and an axial force of 600 Newtons is applied, find the horsepower
capacity, considering a coefficient of friction of 0.25.

Belt Friction

10. A boat exerts a pull of 4000 kN on its hawser


which is wrapped about a capstan on a dock. If the
coefficient of friction is 0.30, how many turns must
the hawser make around the capstan so that the pull
at the other end does not exceed 50 kN?

11. A ball is dropped down a well and 5


seconds later the sound of the splash is heard.
If the velocity of sound is 330 m/sec, what is

13. A projectile is fired with an initial velocity of 60


m/sec upward at an angle of 30° to the horizontal
from a point 80 m above a level plain. What

14. An airplane makes a turn in a horizontal plane


without sideslip at 774 kph. At what angle must the
plane be banked if the radius of turn is 1.75 km? If
the pilot weighs 600 N, what pressure does he exert
on his seat?

15. A weight of 400 N is fastened to a cord which is


wrapped around a solid cylinder of 1 m radius weighing
1200 N. The cylinder rotates about its horizontal centroidal

17. A train weighs 16,000 kN. The train


resistance is constant at 96,000 N. If 6000 hp
are available to pull this train up a 2% grade,
what will be its speed in kph?

18. A bullet weighing 0.30 N and moving at 660


m/sec, penetrates a 50 N body and emerges
with a velocity of 180 m/sec. How far and how
long does the body then move?

Flexible Members

19. A flat belt is to transmit 100 hp to an air compressor.


The small sheave is 180 mm in diameter and turns at 1200
rpm, while the larger sheave turns at 450 rpm. The service
factor as 2.0, the center distance is equal to two times the
diameter of the larger sheave. Determine the length of belt
in mm and the arc of contact of small sheave in degrees.

Flywheels
20. It is found that a shearing machine requires 300 J of energy to
shear a specific gauge of sheet metal. The mean diameter of the
flywheel is to be 762 mm. The normal operating speed is 200 rpm,
and slows down to 180 rpm during shearing process. The rim width
is 304.8 mm and the weight of the cast iron is 7,200 kg/m3. Find
the thickness of the rim, assuming that the hub and arms account
10% of the rim weight concentrated on the mean diameter.
