Wikipedia says :
“ A process for making a
physical object from a three-
dimensional digital model,
typically by laying down
many successive thin layers
of a material.”
How does it works ?
• Basically it works on the
same principle as that of
CNC machine
a CNC (Computer
Numeric Control)
machine.
• Difference is, instead of
having a drilling/milling or
laser setup, it has a
'plastic filament
extraction setup' at the
output end.
Plastic extraction setup
How much it costs ??
What was the idea behind
selecting this project ?

&

How will this project be different

from other 3D printers ?
(1) 3D printers can really hit hard on your pockets !
•Thus we'll make this one out of regularly used materials to be
cost effective

(2) They are quite bulky and delicate. Thus making it very difficult
to transport.
•The one made from DIY kits need to be assembeled again when
tranported.

(3) This project is specifically designed for small sized 3D printing.

•Like prosthetics, artificial teeth/dentures, small sized bones, for
making small industrial euipments like gauges, small pipe
breaks/connectors, craft/arts purpose, etc

This site deals with the basic concepts of CNC

machines. A CNC machine is a computer
operated machine made from stepper motors
working over as 3 axis - X, Y and Z. Any one axis
has a output drive which defines the function of a
CNC machine.
•For example adding a miller to output end would
make it a CNC milling machine. Adding a laser
module would make it a laser cutting machine.
Adding a plastic extruder and heater would make
it a 3D Printer.

•All the stepper motors are responsible for

calculated movements of this machine. They are
regulated by Stepper motor driver IC, and are
controlled by a controller. All the movements are
decided by GCODE. This GCODE is fed into
stepper motor. This GCODE is nothing but the
coordinate conversion of an object or image.

This site explains about 3D printing. Its gives a brief introduction to 3D printing
technology and 3D printers. It further explains about how 3D printers works, what is
the extruder- filament- heater setup required for making a 3D printer.
Mechanism research of 3D printing based on virtual
running - IEEE Xplore

This paper explains the making of a 3D Printer.

Basically a 3D printer needs a chair like body
made from either steel, fiber, acrylic or MDF
wood. It needs 4 stepper motor and 4 stepper
motor driver IC. It needs a power supply. All
these are used for making the CNC required for
3D Printer.

The 3D printing part needs a nozzle, ceramic

heater, extractor, PLA plastic fiber and a stepper
motor to move the extractor to remove the PLA.
Stepper motor are controlled by GCODE, they
move according to it. This GCODE it generator
by a compiler like software. This GCODE is
generated from the CAD file which is made by
various soft-wares like AUTOCAD, RHINO etc.

What we wanted with our project ?

When this project will be completed :

(1) It will be a compact and easy to carry portable 3D printer

(2) It will be cost effective
(3) It could be widely used in prosthetic field and industries
making small sized parameters
(4) It will be easy to use for a layman

GLUE GUN

DC Gear Motor
BEARING
FIRST OUTPUT:
ADVANTAGE: COST EFFECTIVE
• As we have used GLUE GUN STICK as the 3D printing element, there are 2 basic
advantage:
 Cost of GLUE STICK is less when compared to the same amount of PLA/ABS
element

Proof:
In 1kg PLA (1.75mm) we get 300m (approx). Cost is Rs 2000, thus making it almost
7 Rs per meter.
Size of 1 Glue stick: 20cm
Cost of a stick: 3 Rs (bulk order)
Cost of 1 meter of stick: Rs 15
Now, lets compare diameter of both:
For PLA its 1.75mm, for stick the diameter is 5-6 mm.

Thus in 1 glue stick, we get 3.5 times more material then PLA or ABS
ADVANTAGE: FLEXIBLE 3D PRINTING
• One of the interesting fact about GLUE GUN is that when the diameter of the output
end of the extruder is changed, the strength and flexibility of material changes.

• Smaller the diameter, less flexible will be the material

• Thus by using a standard 2mm output for extruder, we get a material which is flexible.

• This flexible 3D printing can be very useful.

• The biggest advantage will be making 3D printing parts which undergo 'wear and tear'
on regular basis, as flexibility can easily undergo stress.

• These rubber-like materials can be used to make things like phone covers, flexible
joints and wearable parts that need to flex with your body.
